Last yeah we had a pit solo. The cross over worked better for us.

By "cross-over" do you mean cross-grip or Burton grip?

I personally use a combination of Burton and Stevens but I use Stevens more frequently (as I play marimba more often than vibes).

There is just more than two techniques. There's about 4. I like to use mainly Steven's and Bourton's

I prefer the Musser grip on marimbas, which is actually the basis for the LHS grip. Musser grip is actually easier when doing 6 mallet work and independent rolls. For vibraphone, I prefer the burton grip...better mallet independence. There's my two cents.

I just learned a few four mallet grips. I learned that the cross over is weird and the burton is...weird. Everything is weird to me. I guess it's because I'm new in pit. Why is pit so different than snare? Why did I ever switch?

You switched because you wanted to be "all round". Four mallets is weird at the beginning. Everything is. All it takes is a lot of practice and a lot of patience. Start with the basics first. Do two mallets and then master that and then you can move on to four.

It really depends on the passage which works better. Some just lay better with each grip. A lot of vibes tend to lay better with burton grip and actually a lot of marimba solos that nobody thinks to play burton do as well. However stevens grip is more versatile in the whole I'd say, but both have their place, and a well-rounded percussionist should be able to perform with either, modifying their own habits to fit the situational needs of the literature.

well theres only two MAIN grips that people use on marimba, and if you use a different grip, well then youre just plain wierd.

Acutally, there are 4 buddy. Musser, LHS, Burton and the cross-over grip. LHS is a derivative of the Musser grip and Burton is a derivative of the cross-over grip. Any other grips that come from those 4 doesnt make a person wierd as you stated. Everyone is entitled to use and come up with whatever is comfortable.
