I've been using the Yamaha bass mallet holders for the past 12 months or so and those little plastic clips have proven to be very susceptible to breaking. I'm having to buy replacement kits every couple of months.

Does everyone else just put up with this poor design or is there a better solution out there I should be looking into?

If there's a way to buy just the clips in bulk, I'd be interested to know where to get them...

I used the Yamaha ones in corps. Seemed like I would break one of the little plastic things every couple weeks. Why they can't make them more durable is anyones guess.

At one point our high school line had little metal U-shaped clips attached to a strip of wood. The strip was then mounted on the drums with Velcro. Worked half-decent, but the clips were so small you couldn't get the mallets in without hitting them right in the center.

I wish someone would design a better bass clip too, or at least Yamaha should redesign their's to not break so easily. I am going to call our Yamaha rep later this week on a different bass-related issue. I'll ask if there is a way to buy clips in bulk.

The plastic clips will last a while if you take care of them. Don't slam you mallets into them. Our entire bass line went through an entire summer using normal plastic mop clips from a hardware store (exactly the same as the Pearl and Yamaha ones but cheaper) and we didn't break a single one all summer.

Mop clips... Do these have a name other than mop clips or a brand I should look for?

A while back, (and possible by Toe) there was a thread on here that had a link to a mop holder that had metal clips that had been dipped in rubber.

Those things lasted forever.

This is what i use...

http://www.containerstore.com/browse/Product.jhtml?CATID=241&PRODID=60125

for the price you cant beat it..Plus....it holds an extra pair of mallets.

Its 12" long, as opposed to the 2 pieces that Yamaha, Pearl, or whoever it is that makes them now have.

They sell the metal clips at any local hardware store. In fact, you'd be able to find those much easier than you would looking for the plastic ones. They don't come dipped in rubber though, at least i'm not aware of that. Be careful if you get the metal clips, constant use will chop up your mallets.

Toe, that's exactly what I was looking for! It's 1/2 the price of the Yamaha kit and very likely made by the same company anyway. At least now I can buy these for spare parts and spend less money!!
Thanks dude.

You can also try the new ones made by XL Percussion. They are actually rim guards and mallet holders all in one.

Is there a link to info on these?

I checked XL's site and they aren't listed.
