Every week from now on, the "power rankings" will rank each corps according to trends, scores, vibe, and so on. The "power rankings" DO NOT necessarily reflect the standings! This is just for fun, so enjoy. The power rankings will come out after each regional.
Week 5 Division 1 "Power Rankings" -
1
YogiBoo - After a somewhat sluggish start, the corps has strung together 10 wins in a row, including the
DLO Midwest Regional Championships and the
DLOFDC Midwestern Classic Day Two show. The corps has been able to ride on the success of last year's championship win, as well as filling out the spots left open by age-outs with members from last years' Division 2 powerhouse Velcro Knights. The corps has not had the overwhelming wins like last season. This year, the corps has to contend with up and coming corps such as the Marching Southerners, The Brassiers, The Engineers and The San Diego Sexy Beasts. Winning a 2nd championship in a row will be difficult this year. Can corps director Mark B. and Assistant corps director Johnny Damon hold off the upstart corps to win another championship? Only time will tell...
2
The Brassiers - Coming off a 15th place finish last year, The Brassiers had a lot to prove. The corps never made any changes with their corps director being defunct the entire season. Now with the corps director back intact, The Brassiers are here to show they belong amongst the elite of
DLOFDC. Having made some major changes to their show in the past week, the corps has surged to be amongst the top 4-5 corps in Division 1. After taking the win at Day one of the
DLOFDC Midwestern Classic, and the top score overall(edging out YogiBoo) the Brassiers hope to continue to climb with their improvements into a championships. Rumor has it though that Southwind Drum and Bugle Corps and pit instructor Rob Elston have been suffering this summer without their star mallet player from last year...
3
The Marching Southerners - After placing in the top 12 last year, Velocity FD&C put a scare into a lot of the elite Division 1 corps. At one point, the corps was in the top 3 in the power rankings, however a slide in the rankings put them near the bottom of top twelve. After restructuring the corps, and changing management, Vien Ngyuyen changed the name of the corps and gave them a new look. The result: The Marching Southerners of Lithia Springs, GA. So far this season, the corps has fluxuated but is scoring hign in the rankings as of late. The corps was barely edged out by .05 by YogiBoo at Day Two of the
DLOFDC Midwestern Classic. As of last night, the Southerners edged out YogiBoo for the top score of the night by .05.
4
The San Diego Sexy Beasts - Riding high from their successful run in Division 2 last year, coupled with a strong support from the city of San Diego, the Sexy Beasts have made their first season in Division 1 a success thus far! After holding off Season 1 co-champions WRR and YogiBoo at the Gin and Juice Classic at the beginning of the season, the corps slipped a little bit and fell far in the rankings. The word around the campfire is that the consumption of "slippery nipples" and "gin and juice" caused the corps to slip in the rankings. Also, their blatent rip off of the Kama Sutra guard uniforms caused some unfavorable press and feelings amongst those in
DLOFDC. However, after coming out west, the judges seem to be enjoying the program and held the top ranking over all for a few days. At a recent show last week, the corps met up with Kama Sutra after competition to sort things out and clear the air. All six Kama Sutra and Sexy Beasts corps busses were seen to be rocking back and forth, ala Blue Devils style. Shortly before that, corps director Patty Plan was quoted as saying, "If this house is a rockin', then don't come a knockin'!"...
5
The Engineers - All season long corps director Scott Smith has been quoted as saying, "We will win! We will win!". Thus far, the corps has shown signs of brilliance, having beaten powerhouse corps such as YogiBoo, Whiskey River Regiment, The Brassiers and so on. While the corps has a big "bark", the corps seems to be losing their "bite". Recently the corps tied for the third highest score at the
DLOFDC Midwestern Classic, but slipped to 6th last night in the Division 1 rankings. All in
DLOFDC agree that the corps should put their efforts forth in progress, rather than shooting the pervubial "mouth" off. The "Colts" of
DLOFDC.
6
Chesapeake Sound - All season long, the corps has been at the bottom of Division 1. Several last place finishes at the beginning seemed to inflate the corps. But then, after a major change in instruction and management, the corps turned it around within one night and made a surge for the top 12 in Division 1. The corps made an 11 point jump from one show to the next at the beginning of July. Many thought that the score was inflated due to the show being out west, but then the corps made a nice second place showing behind the Engineers at the
DLOFDC Northeast Regional Championships and made a two point jump to take the win in Joliet, IL last night.
7
The Guardsmen - Corps diretor Ryan Galasso has kept the corps consistent and amongst the top middle 6 of Division 1 this year and last. They have been consistently on the heels of fellow midwest corps YogiBoo and the corps have a few victories over their nemesis. Look for this corps to continue to climb.
8
VK Star - By far one of the most consistent corps in
DLOFDC. Mick Gambal has led the corps into the top 12 again so far this year. Perhaps the influx of corps members from the organizations Division 2 corps from last year has helped VK Star to continue to be one of the best in
DLOFDC. Others would say that the corps influences from VK and Star of Indiana has helped the corps thus far. The "Bluecoats" of
DLOFDC9
Jackson Flares - The surprise corps from last season makes its debut in Division 1. After starting out as a Division 3 corps last season, then winning division 3, the corps earned a shot at Division 1 quarters. To everyones surprise, the corps placed in the top 5 overall in Division 1!
definately needing to carry that momentum, the Flares have held consistent so far. The corps suffered a tremendous loss, losing their drumline to incarceration due to public drunkenness. The result was a low showing at the Toledo, OH show. The corps has filed grievances with the
DLOFDC Board of Directors claiming the DC Scandals involvement in a bribery scheme. After bailing the drumline out, the corps climbed back and made up 34 points to place 4th at Day Two of the
DLOFDC Midwestern Classic. Lets hope their recent luck continues!
10
The Red Flames - Red Flames corps director Thomas Cardenas was quoted last week saying, "Ha ha ha...YogiBoo..hahaha....Watch out for the Red Flames! They are, after all, making a strong statement this season. Nice try Mark(YogiBoo Corps Director), but I think Ill take the privilage to "de-throne" you this season." That perhaps, is the Red Flames strongest "statement" of the season. The corps sits towards the bottom of the top 12, and with good reason. The corps is struggling to march and play around the field with one foot still embedded in their mouth...
11
Kama Sutra -
definately the most "controversial" corps of the season. The talk and buzz of this corps has been the most appealing to the "eye" with their corps and guard uniforms, but the choice in musical selections seems to be hurting the corps. The recent rumors about the encounter with the San Diego Sexy Beasts seems to be lingering, as the corps cannont seem to get over the hump to climb higher in the rankings. On another note, the corps seems to have lost a lot of their housing this season, perhaps due to their late night "debauchery" at previous housing sites. The result? The corps has been forced to "pitch a tent" every night in the parking lots of show sites. Perhaps they will "soften up" their rambunctious and raucous conduct and the corps will improve....
12
Hot Air - Where is this corps going? How are they in the top twelve in the rankings? It seems the judges are enjoying the music of Emerson, Lake and Palmer much more than the fans in the stands. They are winning some shows however and show a bit of promise. Perhaps Matt Mayes' statement about amplification within the corps is causing the corps to be truly full of "hot air"...
13
The Mighty Crimson Knights - Just missing the top twelve in power rankings, the Knights seemed to be confused about what they are doing this year. After a strong showing last year, the corps is struggling with the direction that corps director Matt Timman is taking them in. The influx of their division 2 corps last year, The Sylvania Black and Gold, seems to be hurting the corps more than helping. The judges have noticed the lack in playing from some of those members. Also, the musical selections from Phantom of the Opera seem to be hurting them as well...
14
Whiskey River Regiment - What can be said about WRR? Last year's Division 1 co-champion seems to be struggling as of late. The corps has been up and down all year, with a last place finish most recently. The corps dropped 6.5 points from their strong Kalamazoo showing. The word around the campfire is that WRR received a new shipment of Jack Daniels that appears to have been abused by the corps members.
dont count out last seasons' co-champion just yet! Also, word is that the corps is in the red financially, and that corps director Barry Smith has been reduced to working graveyard shifts to make up the deficit in funding...
15
The Washington DC Scandals - After last years success, the Scandals have been nothing more than "scandalous"! All season long, the corps director has talked of changes coming to the program of the corps. However, nothing seems to be showing for the changes, if any were made. The general consensus is that the man with many hats, Tim Jackson, seems to be overwhelmed with the responsibilities with the Scandals and membership with the Concord Blue Devils. Perhaps the man IS NOT Superdrumcorpsguy after all.
16
The Music City Fivesters - The question all season long has been, "What the heck is a fivester?". While the question remains to be unanswered, the one question that is continually answered is that the corps is trying too hard. At the start of the season, Ms. Hernandez announced a star studded staff line up, along with major sponsorship from some of the best in music. However, the show is all flash, with no substance. "Smoke and mirrors...smoke and mirrors.." was quoted from a judge walking off the field after the Fivesters performance in Kalamazoo this past weekend...
17
Sparkle! - It seems that the loss of the Sweet Meatmen from the Sparkle! organization has left some serious "manholes" in the operation. With the influx of members from the defunct Sweet Meatmen, the word is that their seems to be conflict in the corps between former Meatmen members liking "Meatloaf" and current Sparkle! members favoring "Liberace". While the corps is trying to get all members to cohabitate peacefully, the staff and corps director Aaron Tornow have been upset with some members trailing off into the men's shower room, instead of them where everyone else showers - the women's shower room...
18
DJM - This corps has been struggling all season long to find their niche in
DLOFDC Division 1. No one even knows what their show concept is supposed to be...
19
Royal Regiment - After going a name change, the corps fomally known as Prince renamed themselves The Royal Regiment. However the lack of experience and age(15) in corps director Taylor Eddinger has the corps marching and running around in circles!
20
Vegas Blackjack - The only corps hailing from "Sin city". The Vegas Blackjack have been preoccupied with thier obligations to Engleberg Humperdink and Siegfried and Roy. While the corps should have been rehearsing, corps members were seen jaunting off to "Whiskey Pete's" and some of the lesser known casino's in Las Vegas. Perhaps a sign of where the corps is headed: Corps director Aaron Sanborn was seen last week at the Bellagio casino playing no-limit Texas hold-em poker while screaming, "Hit me! Hit me!", "Double down!" and "How can I get a free hooker?"....
21
The Seattle Wardrivers - One of last seasons' surprise corps, the Wardrivers have been busy joining President George "Dubya" Bush on a USO tour in the Indian Ocean and Afghanistan. The corps had the unprecidented honor of performing their "Salute to America" show for the first time in Afghanistan. It was the first time any corps had painted hash marks and field lines on the burning sands of the desert of Afghanistan...
22
Dunit - "Who Dunit?" That seems to be the question with regards to the dissapearance of this corps. Where are they?
23
The Shadow - They seem to have disappeared along with Dunit. Where in the world is Carmen Sandiego when you need her? Hmm...
24
The Brooklyn Rodgerers - One of last years top 12 corps has seems to have had a serious derailment in momentum. All season long, the question has been whether corps director Josh "DLWebmaestro" is going to have the snareline switch from their current "reverse traditional grip" to the traditional "traditional" grip. Everything seems to be going backwards for the corps. Perhaps the entire
DLOFDC community is not getting their "bizarro" approach to the season. Here's hoping the corps turns it around and makes a strong push for a top 12 finish. More confirmation that the corps is in "bizarro" world: The corps was seen last week taking their free day off in Nogales, Arizona. Why? They were helping old Nogales Boarder Jumpers members and other illegal aliens to cross the US-Mexico border BACK INTO MEXICO....
25
Homestar Runners - This corps just
cant seem to catch a break. Perhaps the corps Dave Matthews Band approach with dumping human waste all over the country is catching up with them. Here's looking at you jimi_thing!
