The Music City Fivesters Interview with the Head Drum Major Matt Rochester Name, age, hometown: Matt Rochester, 20, Tifton, GA What role do you have this summer? I am the Head Drum Major for the Music City Fivesters. Give us your full drum corps/marching music background. I marched in high school and college and with the Fivesters Cadets last summer. I was bummed that they had to fold and joined the Fivesters here in Nashville with one of my friends. How did you decide to be a member of your corps? One of my friends wanted me to participate in drum corps and I wanted to do that and Fivesters was close to home. What first attracted you to the drum corps activity? Seeing the Cavaliers 92 Show. What advice would you give to young people who want to march? definately something you would want to do before aging out. It's better than just being at home in the summer doing nothing. The last good book I read: "Shadow Puppets" by Orson Scott Card The last great film I saw: "Gattaca" it's an old film but it just really blows my mind that they would do this sort of movie. Jobs I have/have had: I had to work as a cook in Bonefish Grill and A bagger at Kroger My favorite TV show: JAG Favorite performers: definately Ray Charles How do you "blow off steam?" Since I have to be with the corps most of the time I just put the steam energy to conducting. What has been your formative drum corps moment? I am still working on that. Best drum corps show ever: The Cavaliers, “Frameworks” What are you most looking forward to about the summer? Just seeing how all the hard work goes onto the field and enjoying watching the corps perform at the highest level possible. Worst thing about being in a drum corps:Having to wake up earlier than the rest of the corps During tour, the best part of the day is: Performing a Show What I want to be when I "grow up": Probably an engineer

Fivesters Notes of Doom!!!! We interviewed the Horn Sergeant and this is what he had to say. Name, age, hometown: Justin Briggs, 19, Paducah KY What corps are you in and what is your role this summer? I am with the Music City Fivesters and I am currently their Horn Sergeant. Give us your full drum corps/marching music background. Marched horn back in high school for all four years, Fivesters for two seasons now. UK Horn for one season. How did you decide to be a member of your corps? I heard there was a corps close to me and wanted to test it out, I love it and now it's my second year here. What first attracted you to the drum corps activity? Some of the members of my HS drumline dragged me to a show and I loved it. What advice would you give to young people who want to march? I say just try it out, even if you do not make a corps then learn from those camps. There is always other places you can march and build your skills instead of just sitting home alone in the summer. The last great film I saw: "American Wedding "Unrated Version" it's hilarious. Where I go to school and what I’m studying: University of Kentucky, I am still trying to find my dream. Jobs I have/have had: I use to work at a computer store but that was long ago. Three albums I'd want on a deserted island: Umm tough question but definately three drum corps albums. My favorite TV show: “Family Guy” and "Futurama" Favorite performers: Brooklyn Jazz Band How do you "blow off steam?" I like to run and that helps me but whenever I cannot do that I just like to play my heart out. What has been your formative drum corps moment? Posting pictures of weird animals in people's cars. Best drum corps show ever: I need more time on this to say. I rather say after I age out than say it now. You really do not know until you have done it all. What are you most looking forward to about the summer? Most likely the time will be at the finals just because you know you have worked so hard and its basically the last time you will be as a whole corps. Best thing about being in a drum corps: The experience and the things that you learn from it about life and all the jazz. Worst thing about being in a drum corps: Not seeing your family for long periods of time. Although it rarely gets lonely sometimes you get homesick but there are people there to help you on those matters. During tour, the best part of the day is: Performing in front of the fans that pay to see you there. During tour, the worst part of the day is: Waking up early in the morning. Favorite drum corps personality and why: I have to say our drum major for the Fivesters. He is so funny off the field but he knows exactly when to get into work mode. What I want to be when I “grow up”: I am not entirely sure yet since well I am just 19 years old. I figured I get some credits and experiment in college to see what I like.

The Fivesters Notes of Doom We interviewed James Rock (Percussion Caption Head for the Fivesters) How do you feel this season is going? JR- I feel this season is going well, we are not to the expectations we wanted out of this season but the St. Peters competition determined two roads to which we can follow. Do you think the Fivesters have a chance of being in the top ten? JR- I believe that all the corps have a chance of being in the top ten, its how each staff and member of corps want their season to end. Do you think that you will stay with the Fivesters after this season? JR- I most likely will stay with the Fivesters; I want to build a strong line and if I want that accomplished then it will take more than five years to do so. Are you happy with the way the corps is going? JR- I am happy with the staff and their decisions for the show and their other decisions they have within the organization. We know that the oldest member of your line is 20, how do you feel about that? I feel like is a great thing to have that lucky feeling within the line, I know that I may have the pleasure of seeing him back on the line next year to keep building the line; Although this is not only about a member of the corps but the whole line I think that if we have almost everyone from this year come back and a couple of rookies then the Fivesters will start off their season at a higher level than this past year. "Alone in a field" marks a new prediction to the corps field, was the theme and music for this year a good decision on the staff's part? JR- There are many oppurtunities for sections within the corps to show their talent in this show and I believe that is how the crowd gets a better feeling of what we are all about; This show to my opinion does this. Will we get to interview one of your drumline members? JR- I believe the staff will allow at most two members from each section of the corps be interviewed for the Notes of Doom; I will most likely pick the two if they are interviewed but I believe we still have guard interviews plus ours. To be interviewed, is it an honor for a member to be asked? JR- Considering the low public profile we are keeping our members under then yes; The Notes of Doom will most likely be interviewing the kids instead of the staff members. We hear that Jim Alstead may be Percussion Caption Head next year, is that true? JR- He is currently a Percussion Consultant and we may have two Caption Heads next year but the way it is looking now for him I believe he will stick to Consultant or Visual Designer. The Fivesters are blowing out of Yamaha Brass, do you think that the drums will change from Pearls to Yamahas? JR- While Yamahas are very adequate for us I believe we will stay with Pearl. Thank You James Rock for letting us interview you today. Now we go to Adam Lojell, Drumline Captain for the 05 Fivesters. Name, age, hometown: Adam Lojell, 20, Fort Lauderdale, FL What corps are you in and what is your role this summer? The Music City Fivesters and I am the Drumline Captain. Give us your full drum corps/marching music background. I marched four years with high school all in drumline and I am currently in the Vols Marching Band. I also marched with Memphis Sound for two years. How did you decide to be a member of your corps? After meeting those guys I decided to look into it a bit further and tried it out. What first attracted you to the drum corps activity? My drum instructor introduced me to a couple of his drum corps friends from back in the day and they talked about how they enjoyed every second of it. What advice would you give to young people who want to march? To look into their hearts and just go for it. The last good book I read: "Angels and Demons" The last great film I saw: "The Terminal" Where I go to school and what I'm studying, if applicable: I go to University of Tennessee at Knoxville, I am currently studying to be a computer engineer. Jobs I have/have had: I work at a local video store. My favorite TV show: Family Guy Favorite performers: Ryan Vikedal, Rocky Gray, Rick Marotta, Steven Gadd How do you "blow off steam?" I try to read a lot to blow steam. That usually happens on the bus rides or on free time but if it's during practice I try to hold it off till the bus ride. What has been your formative drum corps moment? definately when I was announced as the leader of a very prosperous line under an excellent staff. What are you most looking forward to about the summer? The fact that the season is here and you cannot wait to hit the road. Best thing about being in a drum corps: Waiting to perform in front of a crowd and then performing. Worst thing about being in a drum corps: The Cold Showers. During tour, the best part of the day is: Sitting next to my seat partner. Sarah and I have so much in common that the bus seat does not disturb me at all. During tour, the worst part of the day is: I believe when we have a long bus ride till the next competition, while you get sleep you still have to sit in a bus seat. What I want to be when I "grow up": I would like to be a computer engineer.

We interviewed Laura Neville (Guard Captain) after the show tonight.
Name, age, hometown: Laura Neville, 21, Jackson, TN
What corps are you in and what is your role this summer? I am with the Music City Fivesters Color Guard acting as the Guard Captain.
Give us your full drum corps/marching music background. All four years of high school, Bluecoats for two years and marched one year with Carolina Crown.
How did you decide to be a member of your corps? I heard about this activity from some of my friends who march Bluecoats and decided to look more into it. I do miss the people in Bluecoats but I love the Fivesters.
What first attracted you to the drum corps activity? My boyfriend attracted me to the activity. He is currently marching Cavaliers. He had tickets to see a show and he told me I would love that for being our one year anniversary and I did. We have been together for 5 years now.
What advice would you give to young people who want to march? Have confidence and don't hold back.
Do you have any favorite road anecdotes? This past year we stayed at a school in Wisconsin. The showers were so hot that we used the locker room as a steam room. Another road one was in Georgia, a group of the colorguard ladies and myself wanted to see what the middle of nowhere was like. We stayed in a very deserted town so we figured that it would be ok to creep out the window with our sleeping bags and go sleep outside in the parking lot. We were punished for doing this but that night was a good bonding night between the girls and myself.
Where I go to school: University of Kentucky Jobs I have/have had: I taught a dance class at my old town.
My favorite TV show: "Dawson's Creek"
How do you "blow off steam?" Usually by just spinning.
Best drum corps show ever: 1996 Madison Scouts
What are you most looking forward to about the summer? The people here.
Best thing about being in a drum corps: The people.
Worst thing about being in a drum corps: Having to do everything in a short amount of time, it takes more time to put makeup than to march a show.
During tour, the best part of the day is: Spinning.
During tour, the worst part of the day is: Having to relocate sites because of the weather.
What I want to be when I "grow up": I want to be a dancer.

We interviewed Robert Croix, Fivesters Bass Drum #2.
Name, age, hometown: Robert Croix, 17, Louisville, KY
What corps are you in and what is your role this summer? I am in the Music City Fivesters Bass line playing Bass #2.
Give us your full drum corps/marching music background. I played bass since I was in middle school. I am going to graduate this coming year from my high school in Louisville and will be marching with the University of Kentucky line.
How did you decide to be a member of your corps? One of my friends encouraged me to do corps. What first attracted you to the drum corps activity? I watched some DCI videos that my pals back at high school had and then I started researching, I sent an email to the Fivesters and they gave me information on the dates and the whole corps experience. What advice would you give to young people who want to march? Do it while you can. Do you have any favorite road anecdotes? During our show in Orlando we had some time off to go to the beach. We all thank the corps staff on that one. Even if it was for three hours it was still great. We rented some surfing boards and went out to surf a little bit. We all sucked except for one of the snare players who lived in Florida way back. He takes a wave and before anything happens he is in the air almost hitting me and some other basses that were in the water. Turns out he did something wrong and was pushed out of the wave by one of our tenors. The last great film I saw: I have not seen many movies that well were "great"
Where I go to school and what I’m studying: I am currently a senior in high school and will be studying music education come college.
Jobs I have/have had: I have worked in so many places I cannot think straight in order to name them all, however, one place that I loved working was at the News station in town.
My favorite TV show: I say it has to be just sitting there to myself watching whatever show is on.
How do you "blow off steam?" I just play my bass. If I cannot and I am on the road then I just whip out my mp3 player and play my music. It's good to blow steam that way since you're actually practicing while doing it.
What has been your formative drum corps moment? The move-in day has been one of the best days of my life so far. I thought to myself, "This is going to be a summer away from home." One of the guard girls checked in at the same time and we started talking about this being our first time in corps. She's been there for me this whole summer and I have been there for her. Basically that is the best corps moment that I have had so far. Meeting her and having someone that understands some things is always nice.
What are you most looking forward to about the summer? Performing in front of fans who pay to see us play for fun.
Best thing about being in a drum corps: The people you meet there. Every single member will teach you a different lesson throughout the summer. There's so many things that people learn in corps that you cannot learn in the outside world.
Worst thing about being in a drum corps: Not being with your family on vacation time. I love being in corps but having to go to college after it and not have a lot of time with the family is hard.
During tour, the best part of the day is: Performing of course. You pay and sweat through all those hours of practice and stepping on the field in front of fans is the key to the question of why you are doing this.
During tour, the worst part of the day is: Probably having to pack everything up really quick in order to get to our housing site on time.
What I want to be when I “grow up”: I would love to be a Bass Tech for a top 5 Division I Corps.
