We caught up with one of the Co-director's of Motor City Marauders, Adam Smith, after the show in Harrison Ohio. Here is a portion of that interview.
Q: Overall how are you feeling about your corps performance not only today but this year so far.
A: Well, we had a very nice performance today, there was some major tearing going on and the marching was a little short of par, but for now I'll say that was do to all of the changes we made the past week or so. As for the year I think we are havinga great first year out. We have been having a steady climb of points, and things are takiong shape.
Q: Many of your members have been quoted saying your Corps is all about the experience and the learning not,
becuase you want to win a championship. Do you have any comments on that.
A: Yeah at the first camp I start off by telling everyone Auditioning that we are here above all for the learning experience of this activity. That Regardless of the place we finish at finals as long as we know we performed a great show and we learned some things out of it that's what matters. However I can't say I don't want to win, we all do at heart, but the activity should be about learning first and winning second.
Q: You said earlier something about the changes you made what exactly did you do.
A: Well after the first couple of show's the staff and I sat down and discussed how we were doing, how everything was fitting together, and so on. We came to the conclussion that although the show we were working with now was running smooth we wanted to make some changes that will hopefully benifet us in the long run. We changed a lot of drill moves to make certain sections more impactful. From this point our weakest area wasn't our playing it was our marching so we needed to fix those problems. We re-wrote the entire drill for the Graveyard scene, which after our kids lock it dowm, improve our GE scores a lot. We also decided to feature our Guard more in Masquerade becauase they have been working so hard, and they have been behind at the beginning of the season
becuase we were short of staff, so those are the major changes made and we have a couple days coming up before we go to Wisconsin to lock them down and be ready to really start tearing it up on the field.
Q:do you think you might wnat to make more changes to the show eventualy.
A: God I hope not. I get ideas on how to change things constantly but I got to keep it together, what i think might be cool
doesnt always work when it's tied in with everything else, but if in the long run these changes don't do what we want we might tinker with it a little bit. It all depends on the next few shows. It's turning into do or die time. With the changes we have have made and are in the middle of making it completely lies on the shoulders of our members. If they want it they'll get it done. We have a determined group of kids.
Q: You say it lies on the shoulders of your members now what do you mean.
A: Simply that if there is a lot of hard work for us ahead there is going to be a lot of days of hard work to make this show everything it can be, but it will only go as far as they want it. The staff and I now have a show that can be great it's up to them to take it there.
That concludes the interview some very inspiring words from Adam Smith MCM co-director.
