Opps you missed one the common saying "git er' dun" (git er dun) meaning to kick a$$ and get the job done.
And then the always favorite "Spell that" used by a drumline when the instructor wants the drumline or drummer to do something they don't wana do, they say " You better spell that" and if the instructor can't you don't have to do the task. ( Well, at least in your mind you don't but it's an ongoing joke)

"Vamos a get-down" is ours. Our former percussion teacher (May he rest in peace) used to say that. It basically means to put some emotion into your playing and "get-down" with yo' bad self.

"Don't suck" ... I've heard that one too many times from our instructor ... I see that "House" isn't on your list ... that's what we call the biggest bass drum, and there's also a Book Report ... apparently it's some weird rudiment consisting of a paradiddle with diddles on the "1" and "a" and a flam on the "&" ...

Eight Factorial...NICE. We call that exercise 867, or occasionally 876.

Snail Shells- Bass drums b/c of what they look like when worn back'erds.

Pregnant Whales- Bass Drummers, b/c of what we look like wearing them

Momma Kangaroos- Snare Players, b/c of what they look like (with the snare coming out of the pouch) the way the harness fits under our uniforms. (looks like to me any way)

Lizards (or Gila Monsters)- Tenor players, b/c of how the drums seem to exaggerate hip size like certain reptiles whose legs stick off the sides of their bodies.

These are some of mine. For more from our 'drumblob' ask DrumsnRoses he's our Drum Major/Co-Drum Captain. Drumblob is one of his, I believe, but it may just have been passed down to him from some of the 'ancient ones' aka 'ghosts' aka alumni.

Here's some that our drum instructor used a lot...
1.Mickey Mouse beats-(n)simple cadence.
2.Gaff up-(v)to mess up a cadence or exercise.
3.Gunk-(n)what you get when you gaff up.
4.Grade school-(adj)used to describe a low level of skill, or low difficulty of music.
Now here's an example..
What's all this gunk you all are playing!? You need to quit gaffing up all these grade school Mickey Mouse beats and practice!

I like how there are so many words for the worst person in the snare line. I find it extremely amusing to first, refer to the worst player in secret until you come up with a nickname for that person, then you can openly refer to a total skrew up as a total...(insert nick name )For instance, you have turned into a(joel, john, maricus, becky etc.) Be sure to be respectful to those who actually cannot physically or mentally comprehend playing drums. It is hard to fathom that someone is literally incapable of playing, but it is true. If you still don't think so, visit my line, and I'll introduce you to a living, breathing example.

- Edited for double-posting. You have up to 6 hours to use the Edit button to modify a post. -

Bus driver: The drumline section leader, or member of the line that takes charge and is generally adored by all. Also used to refer to the entire drumline. The band is a bus and the drumline drives it. If they don't know where their going, the whole band is going to crash and burn. But regardless of how well the drumline does at any event(practice, shows, competition) the ones who get blamed for everything, and are last to be dismissed from practice.

Amber Alert- When someone begins to drift away from the drill during a show, or when someone is setting drill incorrectly, finding themself all alone.

Band Director- The idiot who made us march up and down Duke Univ.'s stadium, back up and back down... (adding the cadance for a higher degree of difficulty)

Dominoes- What the band look like when practicing marching fundimentals, especially if someone falls.

Graveyard- The storage room way in the back of the hall, full of broken heads, old drums, and snapped sticks.

"One handed swimming"- What happens when someone drops a stick.

Water Fountain- The aluminum object attached to the wall. Broken and dented all over from sticks thrown by the instructor.

the one word we use the most for replacing rimshots is CRAT! the T is silent. it sounds like it should be "crack," but we decided that it's easier to say it this way instead. you can use it in something like "crat...o...crat...o...crat...o...crat."
the "o" is the sound we make for the drum.

Very nicely done. My drum major uses a term for long dragged out double stroke rolls, almost as slow as just stroking them out. Fat Cheeseburger - slow rolls sounding like their stroked out. I think it's kind of cool.

One term my line sometimes uses is "Cheesecake". It means being lazy, playing a rhythm with a lazy hand or hands, or just plain not doing anything. We got this term from the nickname for drum instructor last year. All he ever talked about was cheesecake. He was a lazy guy, always showed up late and eventually stopped showing up altogether. We instructed ourselves the last couple of contests.
Good Luck, and God Bless.

Oh sh!ts - When you screw up. We always yell that at people when they mess up.

Con Cojones - With balls

Dirka (dir kuh)- In reference to "Team America: World Police". Instead of doing "Duts" or "Gats", we say "Dirka". Also, with two syllables, it brings out the eighth notes.

ADVERBS!! - Nothing fancy. Whenever someone uses and adverb, we scream it at them, because one of our drumline clinicians does that..a lot.

Jenkinsed- When the Director's or other faculty member's office is spam attacked with printouts of memetic phrases, or when a drummer from another line is served by members of your line. "Dude, we just Jenkinsed the hell out of Malone's office".

____ Goes To College!- Used as a cheap comeback/cheap insult to a member of another section, or just to be funny. "So what the trumpets are in step, I bet trumpets go to college."

B|tch Seat- The seat which contains the band parent in the Lair.

Lair- The back of the bus, where the percussion section resides. Reffered to as Hell, by danceline and female drum majors. Drummer Seats

Shako's- Band hats with plumes, that never fit, may contain things that aren'ts supposed to be on the field. (Lighters, 'Cellular Devices', etc.) Often used to mark places in the warm up area in competition. (Didn't see this one on there...)

Takething- The acttion of: A) Taking yellow tape or other things that are usually discarded after a competition, that enforces non-existant boundaries. B) Confistacting something from someone else, usually done by a section leader/band captain. "I'll be takething ye Cellphone, if I dost hear it ring in this sacred practice hall!"

Sandy- Used for any bass/cymball player who talks excessivley, doesn't listen, and wears flip-flops to practice. Constantly accused of "Pouring Sand".

"Damn1t Sandy! You keep talking and, it keeps sucking! Shut up!"

Pouring Sand- When "Sandy" or other rookies talk, and it makes no sense, sounds stupid, and is heard above almost everything. When this occurs in plural, it's a "Sandstorm". This term is different from Hourglass.

Hourglass Sand- A clean, in time, perfect roll on ride cymballs.

Rick James- A drummer, from a different battery, who moves to your battery--most likely an upperclassman--who royally sucks, but insists that "they're sh!t hot on snare."

Snare Ball (n): Game in which a bouncy ball, preferably a tennis ball, is thrown into the air. Meanwhile, the snares underneath must bounce the ball back up into the air using their drums. IE, a drumline version of keep it up. (can be played with tenors as well)

Baby Seal Killers (n): 1)Thickest triange beater 2)Overly large or combersome beaters of any sort

Mallet Game (n): A game in which pit members find a room with lots of obstacles, and play a game of hard core dodge ball using mallets. Can be played with dodgeball rules (you get hit, and your out) or first to draw blood wins (you can guess) *Different than the Mallet Game listed in the big list*

Set: Yelled very loudly by a section leader or drum tech to call a drumline into attention. ie. "drumline, your at attention... drumline shut up... SSSSEEEEEETTTTTT!!!!!!!!"

Widowmaker (n): The largest bass drum in a drum line. Also see "Castrator", "Ball Breaker", "Crippler" and "Dislocator"

Meat Grinder (n): A drill exercise used to practice verbal commands. Band or section blocks up at one end of the field, is told a series of commands, then must execute them on a loop, slowly creeping toward the end of the field. The band must reach the end of the field without one member screwing up, or everyone starts all over again.

Here are a few I've come across that weren't on the list in this form...

Elephant Nuts (el uh fant nuts) pl. n. - Bottom bass mallets.

Squirrel Nuts (skwer al nuts) pl. n. - Top bass mallets.

This goes along with clam and clam chowder, but we use just chow.

Chow (chow) v. 1)To dirty up a lick. 2)To drop a stick or accidentilly hit it when playing fast, making it flip out of your hand.

Question: what does ripping the end of a roll mean? I heard Scott Johnson talk about it on VF.com in respect to his I&E solos back in the day.

I saw that interview also and wondered the same thing, I think it means to speed the roll up at the end, because that's a common tendency in some players which is why he says you can finall do it in I & E because you wont crap out the line. That's just my guess though its probaly wrong.

Haha in my freshman year on the third song the basses were told to play so quiet that it sounded like "rats peeing on cotton".

We even had RPOC written on our parts. :P

From what I know, ripping the roll is when you don't finish out the roll correctly. It can come from dropping the end of the roll, pushing the end to hard so you speed it up, etc..

Attack - The first note of a piece.

Check - A said piece without rolls or hard rhythms.

Stock - Normal, as written; to go back after changing an exercise: "alright, play the exercise stock. Also, expected: "geeze, best tenors, so stock!"

Apparently - Used to mock anybody that gives directions. Usually not an upperclassmen or director. "Oh, apparently we are doing fundamentals today. Kevin knows!"

Spike and Spock - The high and low respectively, usually 6 or 8 in. drums on a set of sextets.

Ham it up - To walk around out of tempo to no specific drill set. Usually arms are waved and silent taunting takes place.

Those are some my drumline uses.

Snolo (snow-low) - Snare Solo

Screamo (Not a genre reference) - Yelling a solo in a song/cadence when the people that play it aren't present. Can be actual sounds, or just something like "Baaaaaaaaassss Solo!"

Fireworks - Randomly hitting drums all at once to annoy other band members.

Rebellion - Playing a loud rim shot immediately after someone tells yo to stop playing. Usually followed by shouting, "REBELLION!"

We use "rape", too (See above).

I am utterly shocked this isn't in here, maybe it's so common noone thought to add it:

Elevator Drill -- The BD, in a fit of unimaginativity (tm) decides the drum line will simply move up and down the 50 yard line, possibly changing formation slightly, here and there. This may be for one song or the whole friggin' show. Sometimes done in an effort to get the outermost horns (who can't be bothered to look at the field commander(s), of course) to actually play in time with the rest of the band via a centrally located rhythm source.

Turtle Mode -- similar in reference to the previously listed "turtle"; wearing your drum on your back, usually for long walk to wherever your going to be playing. "OK, guys -- turtle mode."

Weeble Wobble -- bass drummer who can't get the hang of marching sideways and so teeters rather noticeably back and forth (i.e. like a Weeble -- "weebles wobble, but they won't fall down")

Toby (toe bee) -- drummer who constantly adds "visual flourishes" to his strokes, e.g. whipping the bass drum mallets in quick little circles for every stroke instead of a normal up-down stroke, flicks his wrists up in exaggerated-moeller-style for every accent, etc. Usually causes the individual to screw up the part. "Dammit, Toby, stop waving your sticks around and just play!"

"We frickin raped in the lot"- We were dirty in the lot.

"We killed the other lines out there."- We were better than the other lines.

"We died on the field."- We couldn't be heard on the field.

These are some sayings from my drumline.

"The Gene"-a different left hand technique
It's an inside joke for our line. Gene was an amazing drummer in my opinion, but he had his own technique. Not like he had improper technique. He knew proper technique, he just had his own that worked better for him. And he has plenty of reasons why. But, anyways, whenever we see someone using the wrong technique that looks similar to his, we say, "Hey guys, look at this, it's the Gene."

That's amazing. I love it.

We use Nick Cannon our line, but more in the context of "Hey Nick Cannon! Do you need your stunt double to come in and play for you?"

Nick Cannon - Someone who wants everyone to think they play well, but they just don't.

well, to answer the "jefe" question, it was a word that we made up, since most of the drumline took Spanish. Al least, I believe it's made up, but I wouldn't know, since I only took three years of spanish and barely scraped by.

my most favorite one to use is:

Crap the bed or more commonly, s**t the bed

...meaning that you have a really good rep going, and then something really bad (and usualy unexpected) happens near the end due to not thinking. Like blowing the end of a really clean roll..

"Man, you guys really crapped the bed on that last run"

Drill-down: A marching game when BD/DM/BD's prize b**** of the day throws out marching commands randomly. If you mess up, you're out. Last man standing wins.

The stick game: Players stand on same line and chunk their sticks at the ground, making it stick into the ground, butt end up. This is played in rounds, and person who who throws it farthest and makes it stick before BD notices and stops the game wins. This was discontinued after we noticed some rot in the beads, so I suggesr using broken or old sticks. (If anyone else plays this and actually has a name for it, please share.)

Space Cadet: The person on line most likely to lose focus and start daydreaming.

A term I coined a decade ago

Ballzando - Playing with such intensity, cleanliness, and volume than anyone within a 10 mile radius can hear.

I always tell my section "Play it right and if you don't know how to play it right then play it better than it is."
