If we didn't vary., we wouldn't have the beauty of Burton....
My main grips are Burton and traditional/Musser.

Indeed, Bernie. Watch some of the great marimbaists out there, and you'll notice that they all have their quirks because they do what's comfortable. Everyone doesn't play exactly like LHS. And hey, it DEFINITELY works for them.
As for which grips I use, I was only taught Stevens and Burton. Anyone else notice that more people are shifting towards the Stevens grip for everything? At least in the groups I've played in, I would be one of the few who knew Burton.
I had a hard time believing that the Cavaliers only use Stevens. How the crap do you mute vibes with Stevens? I personally am trying to master all four grips, but as said above my main grips are Traditional (marimba) and Burton (vibes), not to mention the occasional Gronemeier

Whats the difference between Steven's and Musser grip? What are the uses for all the different types of grips. I use Steven's most of the time, and I have been taught the cross-stick grip. I've seen the Burton's grip, but I never thought they would each have a specific job, but it all makes sense now. I'm a dummy.

With Musser your hands are flat like German grip. In Stevens, your hands are vertical like French grip.
And, to go with what Bernie said, why is it wrong to personalize your grip? Everybody's hands are different. Find a way to make it work for you. As long as you're playing musically and comfortably who cares?
dude chill i was just joking around. and second of all no the two MAIN grips that 99.99% of all people are the cross over (burton) or the seperate (steves) grips. i never see ANYONE use anything different.
