Well, to be brutally honest about it, the board has been kinda dead here lately. So, the staff here at DLO is putting together a few things to get people more interested. One of those things will be a "lick of the week." Every week a member of the forum will post a short lick for everyone to see and discuss. Everyone is encouraged to post an entry. The only rule is one lick per week can be posted, so if a lick has already been posted for that week, please just hold your lick until the following week. That way we can keep this thread going for awhile and get some consistent traffic for the board.
If you would like to submit a video of you playing your lick or another member's lick that would be great.
It doesn't matter what format you post your lick in or the notation. We just want to see them. Thanks in advance to everyone who chooses to participate.
Since I spear headed this one, I will start. This a 4 measure snare lick I threw together this afternoon. It is designed to be played at a pretty fast tempo. I will leave the exact tempo up to the flam drag fighter pilots who learn it. Enjoy.
Practicing this slow kinda blows my mind right now. Too many two count fivelets. Can I make a suggestion that an audio recording (when possible) is provided with the lick for people like me who are audial learners as well as visual learners?
Try playing with a cut time(2 pulses per measure)feel might help. Work on just the rhythm without any doubles or rimshots. Then go back and add on everything and speed it up. It is supposed to be played at a fast tempo left to our ability.
Only problem I see is next week and who will have their music played/chosen. What happens to your lick if not chosen?
Another suggestion I have is to make a interesting sounding idea versus one just complicated and not sounding as interesting. I think this one has both which is the idea. That should be the goal of this DLO/LOW! The most interesting part of this initial lick is the 5-let in the 3rd measure going into the 8th notes and triplet following. Timing!!!
Yeah, I'e been jammin to some dubstep with it so there's your half time. My overly analytical mind decided to slow it down and try and do it in four too. It broke down after I realized the fives were 5:8 instead of 5:4.
Edit: I just realized how much I want to crush those two shots at the end of the last 5. Bah.
It is not a if your lick gets chosen thing...it is literally the first person to post a lick during the week. That way we don't need a sign-up list and licks still get posted.
Now, about the lick I wrote:
I had ventured on snare science on several of the licks posted had tons of timing and stuff like fivelets, ninelets, etc. That was something I had not done much of, so I thought this would be a good opportunity.
I originally wrote a version of this lick that did include a few flams. However, I decided they really weren't necessary so I took them out and changed a couple of the rhythms to make the feel smoother.
If you are learning this, I would suggest taking out all of the diddles and learning just the "check pattern." That way you can get a feel for the music before adding in the "fluff."
Also, there are a few words that can be used to simulate fivelets:
university hippopotamus homo sapiens jennajameson (adults only) opportunity
Lord I ask forgivness for Drumholio, for he knows not what he says. Oh Lord.. How super you are in your forgivness, I ask that you not smite him dead by a mad stricken Sloth.
We thank you for the most and greatest rudiment ever devised.
And now my Brethern, let's sing the hymn " o' how great the Flam "
Ahh, just checking my son. I understand your fleshly desires to seek the Dark Magic of odd time and the 5lets and such. But we need not forget the fundamentals we learned as children. I will say a prayer for you and I give you 12 lesson 25's as pentance.
I bless you my son, in the name of the down stroke and the up stroke and in the Grace note. Chop in peace!
I just got back into ruidemmental drumming after a long hiatus and have been looking for fun stuff to play with. this has been a fun one to work on. been playing with fivelet grids and diddle grids a lot lately this is a combo of both. Can't wait to see the next one. Its like Christmas every week.
And I have thrown some flams in on this one, And Sir Flamalot is correct it really spices it up hahaha. Gonna avoid saying the tempo I play it at to avoid embarrassment.
I hope SirFlamalot gets his flam fill on this one. This is growing on me. I downloaded it yesterday and didn't really care for it, but I started looking at again this morning and have developed an appreciation for it. I still think the flow suffers a little toward the end of measure 2 going in to measure 3, but overall a nice piece.
Well, its a new week, so time for another lick. This one is called FLAM ON, and well, you'll figure out why. I probably should have called it "sacrifice to flam gods" but oh well. The tempo should be whatever you can handle it at, and if you have any questions feel free to ask me.
Wow I'm going to sound like a big jerk when I say this but, the stuff submitted is good but not every one is at level 3&4. This stuff is hot but I bet for half the members, its over their heads. I think it's intimidating to younger writers that may think they need top skills to post. Remember we have young players on here, this is not SS where they think they are all gifts for sticks.
I understand your point, but I was simply referring to the amount of people that have even bothered to LOOK at the music posted. No thread on this board can survive if only 9 people bother to even download the content...and yes I think looking at the music and the difficulty level are mutually exclusive. If you don't have the "skills" to write one of the above licks, that in no way means you can't download and look at the music.
No you are right, things are in a sad state. Funny I found more support for the DLOFDL with non DLO members than with DLO members. I don't know what the answer is?
Well before this thread completely dies I'll go ahead and post another lick I wrote. This one is less about chops and more about speed. It's pretty easy if taken slow. Fair amount of paradiddles in this one. Tempo is 140+
