Have you asked your teacher if you can borrow the school's drums? It's not uncommon for a school to let students borrow instruments.

If you're really interested in buying a set, there are a few places to get drums. You can sometimes find good bargains on eBay, which is where I bought my own set of tenors.

It might be worthwhile to get a tenor pad. thats what I used in my early years before i was able to tryout.

Vic Firth Quadropad and whatever the Xmyox (spelling fail...) one is are both good pads.

Go with a pad. Xymox and Yamaha (produced by Xymox I believe) make great pads. A pad is much cheaper and won't anger or annoy loved ones at home.

Here is a link to the pad I recommend. http://www.lonestarpercussion.com/Catego...h-Rims-XPQ.html

Keep your eye on this texas auction site: https://www.onlinepros.com/display.cgi?categories=800
Schools unload their old stuff through there. A few months ago Leander had a bunch of drums on there. One of my students got a sweet premier snare for $25. I think the pearl quads in the same auction went for $35. You have to be careful what you bid on, because it's all pick up only, and only on certain days, but there are some great deals that happen there.

Looks like you are in Texas so along with Ebay try dialing up texdrumco(online/seller). The best lead is "marching tenors" I just tried it and 10 sets of tenors showed up. They will have other leads when you try that and certain drum shops/stores carry used DCI equipment like Forks and Steve Weiss.

Most everyone who plays has a pad since you can`t play on drums all the time and Xymox tenor pads have become very popular. Although Lone Star has been mentioned you can get the Universal Tenor Pad for $132.00 from Xymox online store but not including shipping for the best price.

I would go with a pad. It allows you to do virtually everything that you could do on the actual Tenors. Vic firth has a great pad that would be good. But if you are looking for actual Tenors or Quads to practice on I would suggest Yamaha. They are cheap and good for a beginner. They are also light wight and Smaller Shell size. Ebay, Craigslist, Southeasttexas.com, etc... Are websites to check if you are interested in buying a used set. You could also check with colleges or schools if they are selling older percussion Equipment.

Pearl also makes a Lower Priced Competitor Series Of marching drums.http://www.pearldrum.com/Products/Marching/Competitor-Series/CMT-Tenor.aspx

But for now I would recommend the Practice pad, and I wish you good luck on your tryouts smile
