So it's finally that time I start deciding what college I am going to be attending. I am probably going to become a music major if nothing else comes up in these couple of months that might change my mind. I've heard that there are many great colleges in Texas that offer great music programs and have great drumlines so picking one is kind of a hard decision. I was wondering if you guys could give me a list of good colleges to attend that are specifically in Texas that you would recommend attending so I can start researching on them?

So far from what I've heard is that the University of North Texas (UNT) has a great program, as well as Texas Christian University (TCU), and University of Texas at Austin (UT). Would anyone recommend these schools or any others? Thanks.

Those are certainly noteworthy. But Texas Tech University in Lubbock is a superior band school. At University of Texas at El Paso, the percussion division is VERY strong and the percussion professor is superior.

The number of solid music/percussion schools in Texas is pretty big. University of Texas, University of North Texas, Texas A&M Commerce (Brian Zator's school), University of Texas at Arlington (Michael Varner's school), Texas State University, Sam Houston State University, Tyler Junior College, University of Texas at El Paso, Texas Christion University, Rice...

There are more that I'm sure I'm forgetting, but from the list above you can do some research and find one that suits you. Texas is a great place to be for music.

Cheers,
Zach

Depending on which discipline of music you're planning to study, that might affect your decision as well. If you're thinking of becoming an educator, I'd say Sam Houston is your best bet (shameless plug). If you're thinking of a performance degree or using jazz drumset as your focus, I'd check out UNT. If music composition or music therapy interest you, those schools are usually a bit more specialized. I study composition at Sam Houston, and and very satisfied with my progress so far, and there's soooooo many years of experience and practical application if that's what you're looking for.

At any rate, I know that may make your decision take a little longer because it's more to think about, but if you're thinking of studying music, there's a LOT of little details that need to be sorted out. Also, it doesn't hurt (if you have the means) to go visit a school or perhaps ask the percussion professors for a lesson before making your decision.

Hope this helps!
