I personally prefer Evans Hybrids which my high school has been using for about 2 years because if you take proper care of them and tune them properly you get a nice bright snare sound, but that could also be said about many heads. On the other hand, if you just love to beat the crap out of the drum then your best bet would be the Remo White/Black Max's. This is all just my opinion on the matter I'm sure people find faults in it though.

It depends on the tuning you're shooting for. They all have their strengths. Well, except the Falam. Newer heads have it beat in every way.

  • Remo Cybermax = super tight, bright tuning.
  • Remo Falam = tight, crisp, and hard as concrete.
  • Remo White/Black Max = meant for warmer tuning than Falams and to have more give for a softer feel.
  • Evans Hybrid = similar in intent to the Remo White/Black Max.
  • Evans Hybrid S = even softer then the regular Hybrid.

Some of my favorite heads are discontinued -- namely the Evans MX White and Premier Tendura. (Seems kinda odd that I tend to like my tuning a little on the low/wet side and both of those heads can be cranked way up there for super bright sound.) Of the heads currently on the market, the Hybrid-S probably has my favorite feel and sound.

R.I.P. Tendura. You are missed.

For my (school's) money, we stick to the Black Max, as they are slightly cheaper for us than the Hybrid, however both are more than suitable for our needs.

well the Tendura is not totally dead. Remo bought the design and them made Tendura (by Remo) and then eventually made the Cybermax. Grab a Tendura lying around and a Cybermax and you will notice the same weave, same color, and same material. I still have an old Marathon plastic head and some original Tenduras for my own drum as well as Cybermax's for lines I teach.

I was lucky enough to use the original Falam 1 heads and they would last forever. I think I had one boned on my drum for 3 years before it EXPLODED and shot the sticks across the room.

The fabric was really durable, but I seem to remember them having a reputation for pulling out of the flesh hoop.

The original post specified KevlarŪ heads, but since you mentioned the Premier Marathon... Those things ROCK. Best Mylar snare head ever. I've got two unused ones laying around, waiting for the right occasion to use 'em. And I'll hoard any more that I can find.

the very first Natural Falams I had wouldnt pull out. They would rip in half from the level it could go to.

I put a Marathon on my Sfz yamaha and cranked it down over a year till the shell was above the rim and you could do "shell shots" the guys in the PIW line I work with couldnt believe it.

Time to double- or triple-hoop the thing. That head's still got some life in it! smile

I have to go with the Hybrid greys, They are in the same range as a white/blackmax but, At least to me, you get a more rounded snare sound. You have more timbres and that helps project the drum.

I've used white/blackmaxs for years. And while I like the sound while we used them. I really don't know if they changed the design over the last few years but with the heads boned up, it felt almost Falam like. Which caused some problems with my line. The greys just don't have that table top feel.

We did try the Hybrid S this season. I have to be honest. It does what it says. They are very giving head which feels great the play on. Down sides are the sound is almost boxy sounding. Plus to get the head cranked it pulled the rim really low the first tuning. With in a month the rim would have been below the stress ring. If the head even lasts that long. I think for a large snare line they will work. but I do not recommend them if you have 3 or less.

Falams and Cybermax really are not my taste. The best of the best KevlarŪ head was the Premier Tendura. I know Remo copied the formula but it just never felt as good, nor sound as good.

A friend of mine said the Core Tec head made by Andante is the best pipe head out there and has a similar sound and feel to the Tendura. If you are lucky enough to find them in the states..

Core Tec

We prototyped the Powerstroke 77's at UCF when I was there under Jeff Moore. Had the whole line on them and we took 2 days to get them tuned up. Jeff walked out and just smiled as we did our warm up. The tenor line hated it, but damn, it felt SOOOO good to drum on.
