His point is that the Hardimon tenor stick isn't currently used by any of the big DCI lines, which is really the primary driving force behind what stick will be used by the majority of the rest of the activity. A few instructors will go with silver fox or something because they love the way they sound, but the majority of us tend to take our cues from the big guys. Vegas are incredibly popular because BD uses them, and because when they hit the market, they were really the best thing going aside from the standard MT-1As. The new hybrid has Tom's name on them, and they were used by the Cadets, and in my opinion, they feel and sound great. IP didn't really take off until they stole Casella away from Vic Firth and started putting recognizable caption heads on their sticks.

Conversely, I've never been a fan of the Hardimon tenor sticks. I got a pair for free and I use them whenever I can't find a matching pair of anything else, but I just don't enjoy the feel at all. I think all they did was chop a ralphie down (minus the paint), maybe make the bead slightly larger, and call it a tenor stick, but there are other things that need to be taken into account in order to give tenor implements a good feel.

^ Exactly.

I'm not babbling, just giving several factual examples to support my position which with a lot of posters here, is not a frequent effort.

As I highlighted, watch the Evans usage expand this fall and unless it is a bad product, you'll see a similar surge in use of Tim Jackson's new stick as well- which is the result of great marketing on Innovative's part, because VF and Pro-mark already have "names" on their quad stick flagships.

The Hardimon quad stick was a fruitless venture for VF. I don't know or know of anyone who currently uses them. Except maybe Ralph wink

I personally dig the Hardimon quad stick for my quadropad, but that's where it ends for me.

As I mentioned in a previous post ages ago, I've used the Innovative Percussion FT-1 mallet for a while now.

Though, I have recently purchased a few pairs of the Ralph Hardimon Tenor stick. I haven't had a chance to play a set of tenors yet, but they feel great on a heavy hitter pad. So, if nothing else, I have a good pair of practice sticks.

As a stick, I really like the Hardimon tenor stick, but as a tenor STICK, not a mallet. I hate moving sticks around a set of tenors, but when it comes to one drum phrases/basic movements, I really like the beef that the Hardimon stick has.

All the top stick manufacturers make some quality sticks/mallets. It all depends on who your sponsored by and what type of sound you're looking for. Personally, from VF I like Vegas, and the classic MT1A. Both have their advatages and disadvantages(Vega's break/bead cracks, MT1A's warp/vibrate). Innovative makes in my opinion the best wood shaft mallets. VF wood shaft mallets feel horrible to me. The Tim Jackson's feel great and are light weight. The FT1 is a beefy mallet that create the ballsiest yet warmest sound of any stick/mallet I've ever heard. Again, what really matters is the sound you're looking for and feel of the product.

Vegas System Blue are very popular and have a great feel and balance. The aluminum will last longer for economic purposes. The sticks I find good are for the first reason feel and balance. Here are a few, Pro Mark Mike Stevens and Vegas, VF Tom Aungst Tenor Hybrid, Scott Johnson Tenor(may be different name now), IP Tim Jackson both models 1&2. Also some snare sticks work great on tenor and one that I have is the Pro Mark DC 10. Shorter stick and made for speed playing.

The college line I'm on now are using IP TS-2 sticks. They're pretty weird. First time I saw them I though they had one of those rubber tips on them because I had never seen a perfectly round nylon head on a tenor stick. I can't tell you how they sound on the drums very well seeing how they are just so out of tune and have those crappy sounding MX white heads on them.
