So I can afford the extra karma loss so I'll be the one that brings up a point none of you like. When someone reads your paper and critiques it's writing without your permission and points out the most trivial mistakes that don't really affect the conveyance of your argument, do you get a little pissed? I bet you do.
No I don't. I get pissed that I made the mistake. It shows me two things. 1) that I need to proof read my stuff better so people don't have the opportunity. If it never was written, then the response can't be made.
and 2) if that's all they have to say to me, I won't bother with them anymore. You don't need to respond to it either, just say "I should have written that better", and move on.
The only place for that crap is the classroom and definitely doesn't belong on an internet forum.
I can't even believe to tell you how much I disagree with that statement, and how incredibly short sighted that is. The whole reason it is in the class room is to use it outside of classroom... right? Once you're out of the classroom 2+2=9, and a base and an acid make Kool-Aide. See where I'm going with this? You use good writing habits at school. What about on a job application? what about in an email at that job? in a text to your boss? to a co-worker? You're a smart kid with good musical instruction, surely one of your instructors has preached about the importance of consistency.
I got news for you: it applies
everywhere. Being good at band isn't just about scoring high at states. It's about teaching young adults how to succeed, and translate those lessons into their everyday lives.
Beyond the whole greater good thing. Its a matter of personal pride, and self respect. Excellence in everything I do. Maybe its just those few years of military school, but if you don't take pride in what you put out, how can others?
This forum is about drumming, correct? Why do more and more posts have absolutely nothing to contribute to drumming and more and more to contribute to spelling/grammar issues?
The way I see this forum is that it is about education. Drumming education. Meaning that this is a type of classroom setting, albeit casual. So even by your immature, shortsighted opinion of where the English language should and shouldn't be used, it fits.
Moving on, I see nothing that indicates a higher percentage of posts are OT corrections than before. the rate is about the same, if not decreasing because much of the user base is older, and recognizes the importance of writing like an adult on a day to day basis, and not just when there is a grade involved.
And why do the posts that are about spelling issues not get negative karma?...
I realize fully that by tomorrow I will have more negative karma, but this post is worth it. I don't care if you don't think it is, this is the right thing to do.
Sure you bring up and interesting point, but this was not the way to do it. It comes off as whiny, and immature. Especially when you started arguing with Toe. (That goes for you too tony, should have just taken the high road)
What is the right thing to do exactly?
Change the rules to allow people to use poor English? (and thus makes the website look less credible) Give users negative Karma for correcting others errors?
Give users negative Karma for spelling and grammatical errors?
Basically I get this
1)You get peeved when people correct your writing.
2)You get peeved when the mods do nothing about the OT posts.
Here are your solutions:
1)Don't make the mistake in the first place. Then no one will have the opportunity to correct you.
2)You'll have to over look it. Give it negative Karma and move on. Its not your job to be a mod. If you really want to make a difference see #1, and you'll get there eventually.
What it will come down to is what you want out of your time here. Do you want to be productive, learn and contribute, or do you just want a place to chill and talk drums without any educational context? Because if you want the latter I can give you a website that does that. Drumhard.
There is no superiority complex, It's people who still care about the language, and recognize the importance of using it properly, whenever and where ever possible.
http://www.apostrophecatastrophes.com/Websites like this, while funny because of their tongue-in-cheek humor, depress me. You put 10 of those in front of your average 10th grader and they'll miss 9 of them because they don't know, or worse don't care.
