I had considered instituting dues earlier this year, just so the drumline would have some funds to buy heads or sticks if we needed them in a pinch. Because what frequently happens is we break stuff, and then it takes the BD like half a week (once we get around to telling him) to actually get the head. It's easier to just go out myself and buy a head. That sort of sounds like what he's talking about. I can't imagine him buying new drums (or raising enough money to) and then somehow hiding it from the BD. That's just dumb.

I'll give you three reasons Yamaha is better than Pearl:

a) Yamaha has a better logo
b) Only girls like wearing pearls
c) All the good cores use Yamaha

P.S. I mispelled corps on purpose.

EDIT: I didn't do dues, b/c i forgot, and i didn't want to take money from the people in the line.

There's a pretty good chance there's more paperwork involved than you're aware of. If that head is being bought with school district funds, your director probably has to:

  • Submit a requisition to your district's purchasing dept.
  • Wait for someone in purchasing to verify budget amounts, approve the requisition, and issue a purchase order.
  • Send the purchase order to the vendor (music store or whatever).
  • NOW YOU CAN GET THE HEAD.
  • Sign off on the invoice and submit it to accounts payable so they can issue a check to the shop.

I don't think you want to open that can of worms. You can be sure that there are state laws and school district policies that dictate what students can be charged for, which organizations (if any) can charge students, and how the money must be accounted for.

That above is very true, my mother and father being head directors taught me that quite a bit. You've also got the people whom love to "check" in to what your buying, why your buying it, and the people whom have ignorance because of what they have not had the opportunity to learn what we do. Like, "why do you need this 50 dollar drum thing when you could get this one for 5 dollars? Why name brand? Why do you need these things?" School districts get tight with budgets with current times, so seeing a new set of anything is a new set of awesome in your drum room!
