This is really bothering me that i cant play this well. What do i need to do to make it go fast? My other cheese rudiments are good except for this one.

Well if you're other cheese rudiments are good then it is probably just your flam drags that need work.

As with all things drumming related, start slow, work with a met, and get the flam drags up to speed to match your cheeses. Or find some exercises that incorporate flam drags and work those.

Here is a good exercise. One bar of flam accents. Followed by one bar of cheeses. Followed by one bar of flam drags. And the last bar is Flam Fives. You could even do the 4-2-1 grid with it. Where is optsyn? :-)

Practice, practice, practice. I used to actually be better at flam fives than cheeses. A few weeks of grids fixed that.

The best way to build speed on any rudimental figure is to become REALLY comfortable with it at a moderate tempo. From here, you should be able to slowly build tempo. Basically, become comfortable at one tempo, push the tempo up until your breaking point, and then work on becoming comfortable with the rudiment at the new breaking point...rinse and repeat....

@snaredrumfreak14

I know your dilemma all too well! Here's what I like to do whenever I'm trying to build up my rudiment speed...

-Set the met somewhere between here and canada. How about 75 bpm.

-If you're leading with your right hand, play the flam 5s with your right hand on the rim and your left hand on the drum. If you're on a pad, keep your right hand on the pad and put your left hand on your leg, much like doing the hokee pokee smile

-As you play the flam 5s at 75 bpm with your hands split, listen to the rhythm of your right hand. Once you have it memorized, stop playing your left.

-Now, gradually speed up the isolated right hand...let's say by 4 bpm. See how fast you can play that rhythm without any left.

-Once you feel confident with that, go back through the steps and switch which hand is on the rim (on the pad), starting from 75 bpm and gradually working your speed up.

Let us know how that goes! And apply it to any rudiment which uses two hands. Wait... they ALL use two hands smile Or two feet... alright here's my daily confession... there was a time when I would spend 30% of my practice time learning how to balance sticks/mallets on my face. End of confession.

wink

Go with Nick on this-

Start slow and build the muscle memory through isolation before you put the hands together. The more comfortable your hands are with the rudiment, the more relaxed they'll be and the faster you'll be able to play.

Don't forget that speed isn't worth anything if the sound quality is lame.

I would use more arm on the flam, like swiss triplets. Try to give the flams more accent and relax the rest of the pattern.
