Ok, long story short, I will be transferring colleges, and when I audition for the drumline there on April 10th, I'm trying out for Bass 5 (please don't question: I have my reasons, please leave it at that).

To give a quick rundown, I played bass drum my freshman year of H.S., all three other years in H.S. on quads, and finally I played a year of quads in university marching band.

I just need some tips to make sure I play the drum right. I have the basic idea of what I need to do (the right way), but I also know that mallet and head sizes differ between drums in a bass line.

If it helps, the drum (if I was told correctly) will be a 30" drum. Maybe 32". Not sure on that though.

I might recommend Bachman's "Bass Logic"

Make sure that your "right way" is the technique that the drum line uses. Most of the bass lines I was in used the same general technique and then I went an audition for a college line and the technique was completely different. E-mail the director or the person in charge of the drum line and ask about their technique. Instructors are usually happy to answer those kinds of questions because it shows you are taking an interest.

Make sure your on top of that beat! As you should know already, bigger drums equal bigger delays. So grip your mallets firmly, play into the head, articulate your sound as much as possible, and hype it! Bottom guy always gets the jamming notes, so get your technique solid, and have at it!

I would get in touch with the instructor of the line and see what kind of technique they use, if you cannot get in touch then ask a former bass line member there. The worst thing you want to do is perfect a technique they do not use unless you are a quick learner and can learn their technique within an hour. Bass Logic is a great book to get for improving bass drum technique and all-around playing.
I would suggest getting some of their exercises and learning all the bass parts, I know you are wanting to do Bass 5 but things change when you have an instructor in front of you.
Make sure you learn all the parts just in case, I know a lot of instructors including myself love to switch people around just to get the right chemistry within a section.
