So we're doing the musical "Aida" this year, and i'm on set in the pit. For those who don't know, Aida is based in Egypt, so naturally there is a good bit of interesting auxiliary parts. Most of the ones i didn't know, google/wikipedia were able to help me with. All except one. Does anyone know what an "Aratze" is? More importantly what it sounds like (since it's doubtful i'll be able to get my hands on one)?

Thanks.

Which tune is it in? Listen to the original and try to pick out the part by ear. That should help you figure out what kind of instrument or drum you're looking for.

yeah I was going to suggest the same. I've never heard of that and if you can't find something on Google that you should be able to find, then it's either a typo or in a different language...

I think they're asking what the OP ended up using for an Aratze as they have the same issue with not know what it is.

I think.

As to the OP, I would also suggest trying to hear it in a recording. Generally African drums like the djembe are good substitutes for hand drums in that context.

As I'm curious, does anyone actually know what an Aratze is?
