I rest the joint of my thumb on my index finger all the time. When I roll or double, I stick my middle finger out a little then pull it back in to stop the bouncing. I play regular strokes with my middle finger right next to my index finger.

i play relaxed. No straight fingers. I use a middle finger fulcrum in my right hand. My laft hand is natural not forced curving but on the other side not forcing any straightness. The stick rests in my hands. I dont squeeze unless needed. I use thumb quite often in the left but i back it up with wrist and arm for power and sound.

The thing about this thread is this: this thread is open to all kinds of questions and also for the people with a lot more of the higher chops levels, to be able to compare and contrast the styles of others with the same level of playing expertiese. So without further ado, I'll get things started....

This thread's purpose is to talk about left hands in traddish grip and the techniques and styles that are used. I am going to discuss my left hand and how it looks, and all that stuff. Here we go...

My fingers are longer than most people. When I hold my left hand in traditional grip, it really looks like my fingers are straight pretty much. They do have a curve to them however...I have a attached a pic of my left hand on this post.

When I play, no fingers leave the stick at all; not even when rolling, playing at high stick heights, or anything unless it is a backstick or any other visual that does so. The key into me doing this, is to maximize the control of the stick in my left hand. To compensate for my left hand being my weak hand, I play everything that I know off of the left hand as well as off of the right hand. This gets the mental chops going as well, and the left hand up to speed a lot faster. The key to how I play is for maximum control of the sticks.

If you want to practice this style of left hand traditional, then some good suggestions I would tell you is that take 2 pennies, and place one of them between your thumb and pointer finger, and between the stick and your index finger. Then, play all your warmups off of the left hand. Once you get comfortable with that, then you will see enhanced control and technique. Also, play all of the stick control exercises and timing exercises that you can find off of the left hand first. That helps immensely with my style of left handed play.

The biggest thing about this the style I play my left hand in, is that at times, you can't really generate a lot of height with it because you can't get the stick up. To compensate this, if you want to incorporate this style into your playing, I highly recommend you look at playing a controlled rebound style of playing. That style is the one best suited with my left hand. It will give you the power you need to compensate with the stick not leaving your hands.

Like any style of playing, if teached properly, this style is a very effective one. Now how do you guys play your left hands in traditional grip? Explain some of the nuances, and what does the grip seem to bring to your overall style. As I said earlier, my grip is control. I can't wait to hear from you guys. And remember, Make sure that you guys make this thread a good one, this will be a good tool for beginning people going into the tradditional grip...that means now scrub posting....make sure everything you say will contribute....not to be mean, but there have been some really unhelpful posting as of late, but back on topic. Can't wait to hear from ya. Oh yeah and below is a pic of what my left hand looks like pretty much when I play...

This is bad especially when trying to build up to any decent tempo. Squeezing with the front of the left hand grip(middle finger, stick, ring finger) causes lack of rebound, which even causes less control, you can keep your fingers ther but its okay for the stick to be able to move. You want your sticks to rest in your hands and you want to avoid squeezing as much as possible.

Well there is a certain technique that should be standard and its not so much grip but how you use it.
1. Don't restrict the rebound this is in full strokes such as eighths but try to never limit the rebound.
2. Relax

Blue Coats Snare audition book 2009 has a very good example of left hand grip and procedure. The thumb should line up with your arm, straight down from fore arm.

all these posts are helpful, but my left snare technique just goes kinda simple. i just place the stick in the fulcrum point between my thumb and index finger and cross my thumb over my index finger, all ways listening to the voice of my percussion instructor inside my head "cross the t and dont let go" refering to the crossing of my thumb and index finger. i then place my middle finger on top of the stick next to my index finger. this finger will sometimes come off when i play fast or do diddles. then i place my ring and pinky finger below the stick these 2 fingers are all ways connnected. I allways make sure the stick sits on top of my cuticle of my ring finger. this helps to provide a better control and cleaner diddles. well this is my snare technique. please comment and tell me if any of this is wrong

Wow. I just realized this thread will be 7 yrs old next month. It doesn't sound wrong to me. It sounds like a good technique. A picture of it would help people give you feedback. My technique is similar to yours. I rest the stick on my cuticle as well but my two fingers at the bottom don't seem to stay connected all of the time. Maybe that's something I should pay attention to.

This is my left hand. I use the technique the Cavalier's use. The thumb is between the first and second knuckle on the pointer finger and the stick is on the the ring finger between the cuticle and the knuckle. Now it is very important to leave the thumb and the rest of your hand relaxed. Don't do the Hitchhiker Thumb where the thumb points up. Mine might look a little like it but that's because my thumb naturally points up but I'm still relaxed. Being relaxed is the key thing to developing a strong left hand. Feel free to critique my left hand just keep it classy.
