On your guys line. What do you use on snare, tenor, and bass drum?

The line I instruct is getting new heads and I was wondering what brand and flavor or combination you use

My school uses Remo white max batter heads, Remo Mylar bottoms (don't know the exact line), Remo suedes on the tenors. I can't remember what bass heads they use.

I love the white max with mylar bottom head combo on snares. With good tuning, our 13" pearls sound great. I can't stand the suedes on the tenors. I don't know if it's just not having someone around who knows how to tune them, but they just sound like crap. On the upside, the hide a lot of dirt, so you might want to use them if you don't have the best tenor line ever (that was why we got them, since both our tenor players were freshman last year). I use pinstripes on my drums at home and those are definitely the way to go.

I think Remo and Evans both have a selection of really good marching drum heads, along with some that aren't quite so good.

For snare drum batter heads, my favorites are the Evans Hybrid and Evans MX White, depending on how bright a sound I'm looking for. The Remo White Max is also a great head. For snare side heads, I tend to prefer Mylar heads like the Remo Marching Ambassador, Evans MS3, and Ludwig Xtra Thin. If I wanted to go Kevlar®®/Fiber on the bottom, I'd go with an Evans MX5.

On tenors, my personal favorite is the Remo Renaissance Emperor. It's kind of a funky color, but those things sing. (You've really got to keep on top of tuning, though.) Remo Suedes and Pinstripes can also sound great, as can Evans Frosts. I'd like to hear the new Evans Corps Clear heads.

On bass drums, I like the ol' standard Remo Smooth White Ambassador and the Powermax version of the same head. Emperors have a different sound, but they can sound great, too. Hope this helps in your selection.

Here's what we'll rock this fall/winter:
Snare: White Max (Batter); Remo Hazy Diplomat 2.5 mil (snare side)

Tenors: Evans Corps Clear (moved to these form the Remo Emperor Renaissance heads and they are even BETTER - more durable, hold their tuning longer and a great sound)

Basses: Remo Ambassador Smooth White (top 2), Remo Emperor Smooth White

For a second, I thought bluehoo just had good taste in drum heads. Then I realized, "Hey -- I wrote that!":
http://www.drumlines.org/threads/ubbthreads.php/topics/187672

But to follow up a little bit on that post (since like anyone else I'm always learning)...

Now that I've heard them and played on them, I'm not the biggest fan of the Evans Corps Clear heads. They're OK, but not my favorites. They seem durable, but just didn't get the projection I wanted to hear. Part of that could've been the venue, so I'll keep an open mind, though.

And I was under the mistaken impression that the Powermax and Ambassador bass heads were more similar than they really are. They are the same thickness and same number of plies, but they're made of a different film and the Powermax has a reinforcing dot. Both heads are still about equal on my list of favorites.

I like the sound of the black/white max series from remo. on the snare side, falam II. Quads, if you like the brighter sound, go for the pin stripes, but if you cant replace heads very often, the pinstripes break, or go dead fast. the suede emperor is also a good choice for a warmer sound, and a little more durable then the pin stripes... basses hands down should use the power max series.

Here is our Fall setup:

Snares: Evans Grey Hybrid top, hybrid bottom (WOW what a sound!)

Tenors: Corps Clear on main drums, MX White on the spock

Basses: MX1s

Front: Various Strata Heads

I am loving the Grey Hybrid/Hybrid bottom combo on the snares, and the Corps Clears are holding pitch nicely thus far.

My line uses Remo heads on all drums.

Snares use the White Max batters with the clear resonators. Just from personal taste this is the sound I like. We were using Flam II on the bottom but something about the sound wasn't what I was looking for.

The Tenors use The Clear Pinstripes. These have what I feel the best projection of any other tenor head available. They also produce the sound that I associate with marching tenors.

As for the Basses I just switched to the Smooth White Emperors from the Ambassadors. I love the sound the 2 play head makes with the basses. I had been using the ambassadors for years but made the switch this season and will never go back. Plus they should last longer.

As for Evans I've notices that they don't project very well. at least not as good as the Remos. My former College line just switched to Evans and now from the stands all I can hear are the mid and low basses. Only rim shots from the snares make it and none of the tenors. And I know it's not the line since they have near 40 people this year, which is about 15 more than last season.

You also get the problem that all drums with Evans Heads sound alike. They sound like they have Evans Heads. For a program with low quality drums or that has a hard time tuning drums these are great. To me Evans heads just eliminate the creativity and individuality of tuning. Just my opinion though.

Sorry SkyDog for plagiarizing your thoughts. I thought it would have been a good response since you responded to a similar topic that I posted on heads in the past. Honestly I thought that your statement helped me the most when I was talking about heads and I wanted to share that with the rest of us. No hard feelings I hope.

Nope, no hard feelings at all! (It takes a lot more than that to offend me!)
