ok dont know if this goes in hardware or what, but i have a used remo white max head, and im thinkin about gettin cheap drumset, if i put the white max on the concert snare drum would it give me the marching snare feel? if so would it sound the same as a marching snare? sorry if this is a stupid question.

You probably wouldn't be able to crank it up high enough to get a marching snare feel, and if you did then your drum would die.

A concert snare is not made for that kind of tension. As onespockadam eluded to, you're just going to ruin that drum.

just a quick question
why do you want a marching snare sound on a drumset?

Well I had an extra snare and a used Black Max and Falams 2 bottom head so I put them on. I have it cranked up pretty high and nothing has happened to the drum it self. It sounds much different than a regular set snare but it doesn't sound like a marching snare and i think that is due to the metal snare wires instead of the marching "snares"

Yeah, akeith is right, take those heads off asap or else your snare will be PERMANENTLY ruined. If you don't want that snare then send it to me laugh.

Drum set snares simply aren't built to handle as much tension as a marching drum, much less Kevlar heads. If you cranked that head tight, here's what's happening right now:

  • Your shell could be warping.
  • Your lug casings could be bending under stress, leading to one of two eventual outcomes: (1) The casing will eventually crack or break, or (2) It'll rip right out of your shell.
  • Your tension rods and/or barrel nuts could start to crack and might eventually shear.

Damage from excessive tension usually isn't a sudden thing. There's typically damage to the shell and hardware long before you get the spectacular hardware failure like a sheared lug or collapsed shell.

Yea, it may not look like your drum is damaged now, but wait till you change heads, and the drum is so weak it just starts falling apart. I would imagine a kevlar head at a low tension might give you an odd color, but don't crank it past tension at all. I wouldnt trust this idea on anything other then a crappy snare that you don't really care about.

Bottom line, its just not meant for that tension, now maybe, if you were able to put the free-floating ring on the snare... Didn't Pearl already make a free-floater drumset?

just to let you guys know, being a drummer, he meant to hit the rims, it's part of the effect. It changes it up a bit.
