I have a Musser M-300 4.3 octave marimba in my bedroom. It's a great marimba, but the sound carries for days, and it drives me nuts! I just got back from a 5-week summer program where I practiced on an old Yamaha, and it sounded dead at first (because I was so used to mine), but I got used to it. Now I'm home, and my marimba sounds like vibes with the pedal pushed down. Does anyone have any advice or ideas on how to dampen the ringing? I even went so far as to take off the resonators and it didn't work. Help!

well what type of wood are your bars(the one that rings) made of?

because i had a similar problem, i would always practice on my schools marimba witch had kelon bars, and at first i thought it rang like crazy, after playing it all the time i liked it, then i bought my own marimba for my house and it uses padouk bars, and i too at first thought it was dead, but now im used to the less resonense.

yeah man any keyboard made out of kelon is going to ring for a long time. i don't really think you can muffle the ringing. i've played on musser marimbas plenty of times, and they do ring, however, i don't think it rings enough to where your performances would be hindered. just deal with it until you have 15,000 or so to buy a malletech grand imperial or a marimba one. haha
