34 dB might be a bit much. My plugs are 20 dB, and if they blocked much more, I'd think I might have a hard time hearing subtleties.

i have the tan hearos which are 32db. ive been wearing them while i play tenors inside and they work pretty well. they just turn down the volume. if 32 is too much, you can pull them out a little and they still work of course. i just got the 20 something pack so i have enough in case i loose any. i dont know what they are like on the feild though.

Haha, I know you. You wore ear plugs on tour? I don't take much notice in these things I guess. Are you marching this year?

If you're half deaf already like me, have your bad ear face the line. Jk.... that's probably be bad for listening in.... but, you really don't have to spend to much money, any ear plugs is better then none. I personally like the headphone things cause ear plugs don't stay in my ears.

I always use ER20's and i agree with some previous people it is just like turing down the volume. I attach them to the side of my snare with the plastic case that comes with them so they are always there and there isn't an excuse to not use them.

If one can use the standard foam earplugs, there probably the cheapest way to protect your ears, but it's a worthwhile investment to get some form fitting earplus that filter without sacrificing all your hearing.
