Great job man! Those are some of the better videos I've seen on youtube. If you're only a sophomore, you're definately on the right path to being really good.

Thanks Nunga! How'd you figure out I was a sophomore? Did I post it somewhere that I just don't remember, lol?

DigitalDrummer, it's audio ripped from a video where wrestler Ron Simmons says the word "DAMN". It's his trademark, lol.

Yeah, I rushed the hell out of the sixtuplet phrase right before the hi-mom herta bar.

It was at a practice with Casey Brohard when I found out. A couple of us started playing Jedi then at the end he told us how it lined up with the ATHF intro. How he found out? No idea, lol.

You've some ashtray hand going on with your traditional grip. Also called "catching water." In other words, your palm is facing up towards the sky, and if it was raining the water would stay in your hand. You need to turn your hand so that when the stick is in contact with the playing surface, your palm is like this | not like this _ . There's considerable discussion with pictures on the ultimate trad grip thread. Also, your left hand is very high, you should drop it down so the stick is making less of an angle with the head/pad. Finally, maybe it's just how I learned/teach, but you've got very little angle on your right hand and a lot on your left, horizontally speaking. So if I'm looking down at your sticks from in front of you, your sticks look like an L instead of a V, if that makes any sense. There's a possibility that you were taught to play that way. I teach that the sticks make a roughly 90 degree angle, maybe a little less, with each hand being 45 degrees from center.

Everything that was said in the post above, and...

...you are playing behind your fulcrum on the left hand, which is probably the biggest contributor to the poor technique.

Once you turn your palm in instead of up (which will actually allow you rotate instead of lifting your left hand and also allow the contact of your finger and thumb to remain), choke up a little less than an inch with your left hand and angle the right down more; you'll notice a difference in sound quality, more control, a faster feel and more than anything a more consistent hand-to-hand sound quality.

*It is my preference to teach this way, as some will argue otherwise, but I believe that the fulcrum is in the same place on the stick for both the left and right hand.

One last thing- your left hand should be wrapped around the sticks when you bring them in- the way you have it now, they'll fall out of your hand if the wind blows too hard. wink

It's a big improvement in all the stuff that was mentioned, except for how you hold your sticks with the left hand, that still looks retarded, sorry. Your left hand is still a little bit high, but I think the pad is a little lower than a snare drum should be so that's probably the real issue. As for shifting horizontally from an L to a V like I mentioned, it looks really good when you're not playing, but when you play, once in a while your right hand flattens out and the result is a huge gap between your beads. Check out the vid around :45 for a good example of this happening. You've also got a bit of a slice on the right hand. Slices usually take some serious time with a mirror to fix. As for your left, you've made a good effort and you've gone from _ to about / there. I'd say keep shooting for |. Sorry but ASCII is the best I can do to describe it for you. You've made a pretty good amount of progress, keep it up.

snare4lyfe, your technique has improved tremendously over only two vid takes but the left hand still needs a bit more work......keep the thumb straight up.....dont let it shift back to an ashtray.it happened towards the end.........since everyone is doing it i might as well avoid opening a new thread..qucik criticism on this please......i know the roll at the end was terrible.......

You're still catching water in your left hand. And you need to get your body closer to the pad. Practicing with the pad so far away from you can create bad habits.

I've got some tips for you skyhawk,

your left hand grip is too close to the center of the stick, scoot farther toward the butt end of the stick. Also, you need to let the stick rebound off of the drum more. Try to control the rebound the drum gives you.

EDIT: After watching it again, i have this to say...
your left hand is angled too far upward. Try to get more parallel with the drum. Also, you need to let your arm into your technique more. Try watching some SCV videos on youtube to get the idea of what I'm talking about.
