Hi all, the HS line I teach uses Yamaha drums and we have the white fiberglass vest harnesses. I really want to paint them all a nice black so they are not as noticeable again the black uniform pants.

I did this few years ago with the bass vest, but the finish was very easily scratched.

Does anyone recommend anything? type of paint? sealer? Anything that can do a great looking, long-lasting job is a plus.

thanks for the help!

There was a thread on this form asking the same question a while back: LINK. The consensus seems to be covering the carrier with vinyl.

just to add to that thread since that thread pretty much just says "use vinyl," if you decide you want to go the paint route instead (vinyl seems to be the superior choice but I have no personal experience). Sand the carriers using so fine grit sandpaper, then spray them using "bumper paint." They sell it at automotive stores, probably home depot too but not sure. It's really durable paint, and if you do multiple thin coats it will hold up well. We used it to to spray paint some plastic jam blocks that got banged on all season and as far as I can remember (Rob maybe you can help me out) they didn't chip all season.

I sure can.

Flat black "bumper paint" is what we used. It was an off-the-shelf purchase from pep boys.

Both of those will work just fine. I've used them on the Yamaha vests as well and it was a billion times better than regular spray paint or the contact paper we tried once (bad idea).

Four thin coats of that stuff on the yellow LP blast blocks that we beat the stuffing out of all summer and they never chipped. I still use mine on my kit and there's only one scrape from transit.

What i did with my carries was i painted them black with pvc paint. Its also called plastic paint its primarily used to paint like outdoor furniture and such. (you can get it at home depot) And then i put a coat of clear acrylic paint on top of that. they came out great and they didn't get a single scratch on them.

Yeah, that's what we did at my school. We just wrapped the harnesses in black electric tape. It looked great.

i personally have had no experience doing this, but i'd suggest putting a some acrylic on it like this guy did.

try rustolium (sp?) spray paint (they have it at walmart) it should look ok if you fill in the nicks and scratches with sharpie when they appear
if you do 3 coats each they should be ok
