Our line leaves room for the fulcrum. I've tried taping the whole stick but sometimes my hands would get swety and the stick would get slippery.

The first time you use a stick that has just been taped it is going to be slippery but the more you use it the less slippery it will become.

I have my snareline tape the sticks full all the way from taper to butt. This is to keep hand sweat from logging the stick and subtrating from the good original sound quality. We try to minimize tape overlap as much as possible, so as not to add too much weight to any part of the stick.

We tape all the way to the fulcrum. The tape overlaps itself.

But wouldn't the tape covering that much of the stick, hinder the resonation of the stick, thus hindering the original sound of the stick?

My line taped 3" from the bead, to the bead.

we tape it just long enough so that our fulcrum is on the tape but nothing else is with the right, with the left we tape to the same length as the right

I tape my sticks from the bead to halfway down the stick. My reasoning is that I need the tape to prevent the stick from splitting/breaking, so I tape the only parts that will ever hit the drum or rim. Same goes for our tenors sticks.

our school's line uses vic firth sticks so we go from the bead to the american flag on the stick. its just something we made up. and I tape our tenor sticks half and down to the grip but not under. we use plain white tape and orange for Halloween!

I highly doubt it.

When you tape up to the fulcrum you add weight to the front.

Sticks aren't made with weight in the front.

I would think taping it all the way down seems more logical to not "hindering" the original sound quality.

Our drumline tapes snare and tenor stick to about the fulcrum with it pretty much overlapped. That's the way I was taught, and that's the way that we are told to do it.

i tape all sticks to the point that if i were to hold it in a left handed traditional grip, my ring finger would be just barely in contact with the tape.
then i scratch off the finish all along where my hand contacts the stick. i usually use a hunting knife for that.
i have sweaty hands so i really need the direct grip
and the tape is just to add a little heft and keep the stick from breaking as fast

Most of the guys on our 'line tape up until the fulcrum, a space, a little bit on the back end. But because our center snare tapes all the way, we all have to as well. I'd rather just leave a space for my fulcrum cause my hands sweat a lot and it's just easier that way.

I tape the snares scott johnsons from the bead to the flag and then the "C" in his sig to the butt. I tape up the butt side more to give it more of a counter weight. our tenors dont tape. our bass tape from the tip to just above their hands.

For soudn purposes, i hate taping sticks. I think (just in my opinion) that it makes rim shots softer, and makes the sticks heavier making the snares soud lower. Though, to preserve having to go buy a new pair of sticks every month, we take the tips to about to where the end of the Vic Firth name is. Then we tape from the bottom up to where the fulcrum is. We added a notch of tape this year at the fulcrom to prevent slipping? It works out well, it just adds more blk to the stick.

We also tape our tenor and bass mallets just to match. We used the color red for all of our sticks because of the show we're doing (Carmen.) Usually, bass mallets aren't taped, unless your bass line is hacking happy... and Rim click happy.

My line doesn't tape our sticks. We compared tape vs. no tape and found that sticks without tape creates a richer more natural sound. Especially during visuals where we click our and eachother's sticks together.

It's an "Each to his own" situation, I suppose: whatever sound makes you happiest.

I think the only advantage stick tape has over electrical tape is that it won't get slippery when your hands start to get sweaty and whatnot. So I guess it can improve your grip on the stick as well.
I've never really tried it myself, but that much I know.

my line uses tom aungst sticks and we overlap about 1/3 the width of the tape. when the tape is on the stick, it looks like the same amount of the tape is overlapped as not overlapped, if you get what i mean. also, we leave a gap for the fulcrum, so when we do stick changes around our back, we can feel where the fulcrum is and not have to look down. some people like bigger or smaller gaps also...it's up to the player. i tape mine from the bead, to 1/2 way through the H in firth, then from the end of the flag to the butt.

also, about sticktape. center snare at my school was also center snare for raiders the past 2 seasons. they're sponsored by sticktape and she said she hated it and so did everyone else on the line.

Snares - Black tape from butt to tip overlapped at about 1/4 the width of the tape on each pass. Than wrapped again with red tape at a very high angle so that the black shows through. (Our colors are red and black)

Tenors - Same as snare except grip area is exposed, we use vegas so we leave the grip area exposed so we can tell the snare and tenor sticks apart easier since the vega's are basically a drumstick.

Bass - No wrapping - we use alluminum shafted mallets with the rubber gripping area (vic firth?) so tape is not needed.

Do you mean the vater percussion grip tape??If so it is softer and it doesnt get slippery on the hands when sweaty.but it causes calluses.
As for my school all sticks are taped up to the flag(we use strictly Vic Firth sticks).
I myself tape up to the flag, then from the end of the flag to the Butt leaving space for my fulcrum.Since the flag is where the fulcrum is supposed to be i presume.

i do the same thing, except i overlap a lot. It adds more protection to the sticks and makes them heavier. I think more weight not only feels good but it means more chops in the long hall

Our snares used to tape the entire stick white (even though we used Hardimon's) and then go around the entire stick with blue stripes.

It ended up being too expensive. We would have to retape the blue before every game because pep band and the halftime show rimshots made the blue look choppy.

Now our entire drumline tapes all black. I have a pair of Paul Rennick's that I have taped to the fulcrum, and about an inch from the butt, but I'm not allowed to use them. (Because they're featherweights. ;P)

I know this post is a bit dated, but I just came across it now...

In regards to Stick tape (specifically Stick tape.com) I feel there is a significant difference in a few areas (for me at least) besides the most noticeable being the adhesive, it's A LOT less sticky but still sticks extremely well to the stick (and not to your hands on hot days). It's slightly thinner than electrical tape but also more durable as well due to the PVC backing (a big plus).. AND it come in larger rolls (less $ per roll as well)

I think it's a great way to go... I personally only use Sticktape.com for our programs needs..... I recommend to those that haven't tried it... try it out. Anyone who has a great amount of experience with electrical tape (eg. being used in extreme cases... meaning really abusing sticks and wrapping a lot of sticks) you'll love this alternative. My opinion and I've been around.

(to a newbie, or someone who doesn't play a lot etc... you won't notice much... although to experienced drummers out there... the small things mean a lot)

It doesn't melt?

A friend of mine bought actual "stick tape" (as opposed to electrical tape) and I didn't realize that it was melting until some of it got on my drum.

It also got on the bass heads before Homecoming, and considering it left a huge black smudge, we had to replace them. ;P

I believe my schools snares tape all the way down.

personally, i like to tape snare sticks all the way down till about 3-4 inches from the butt. same goes for tenor sticks.

When I have to do it for time sake with my students at a contest, I just try to tape it like a barber pole, or candy stripe. Then to clean it up, I put a small piece at the up next to the tip. I like to use black or white because they seem to be the most tasteful. But as someone pointed out in another post, the tape does effect the sound. It tends to dull or mute the sound a bit. But, with today's high volume equipment you may not notice it as much, like you would a practice pad. The white Ralph Hardimans might be another option besides tape.
