Is there any way to do the prescribed notation in something a wee bit cheaper than the full version of Finale ($600!!!! -- that's rent, ladies and gents)?

I broke down and bought Finale PrintMusic so I can write percussion scores in something other than my semi-legible scrawl; but, I can't seem to figure out how to achieve hollow note heads, remap the staff, etc.

If not, count me as "priced out" of the contest.

"All Cadences must be original material and written by the person who is submitting it "

Note that it says person and not personS.

You can start off by reading the documentation that came with VDL:1 and how to set it up.

Errr...never mind. After a bit more research it is definitively *not* possible to edit note heads or instrument mapping in anything under the pricey full-blown Finale.

I sounded whiney, anyway. :-)

Sooo, consider my survey vote changed to "I don't have the software/soundfonts."

Similar to cymbals, most lines call things different things, for instance rimshot/gok. So could someone define some stuff for me. I'm sure I'm not the only one wondering.

Rim knock, stick click, rim click, crush. I have a guess on all of these but I want to be for sure. Thanks.

Rim knock is simply hitting the rim with a stick on a snare drum

Rim Click is hitting the rim of a bass drum (technically the same as a rim knock)

stick click is one stick hitting the other stick

a crush is a buzz that lasts for the duration of the note (I.E. 8th note or 16th note) listen to SCV snare solos from 98 and 99 for examples

Ok, as of today we have 5 cadence entries for the competition. That is a good start considering we still have over a month to go before the deadline. A couple of things I need to cover:

Two of the cadences already submitted did not include the original file (sib, mus, etc). Since this rule was added at a later date, emails have been sent to these individuals for them to resubmit their cadences. However, there is no way that we can continue to be that lax when it comes to the rules. So, please take this as a reminder to completely read the rules before you submit your cadence. There will be no more helping people out, and from now on if your submission does not include everything required, it will be disqualified.

Item number Two. Please do not send anything other than what we have asked to be included. There is no need to send a midi file, an mp3 of the midi file, and an mp3 made with a kontact player or anything along those lines. You want to send your best sounding file to us, so please choose that before you submit your cadence. I will say this again for complete clarification: Please only include the original file, a pdf, and an mp3. That is all we ask, and all that we want.
