at your school, what seem to be the pit instruments that everyone inside (and out) of the pit have respect for or would want to play?
the two big ones are timpani and chimes.
chimes seem to cut through the entire band, and timpani is a lot of fun to play.

i dont usually enjoy drumkits in pits, but i suppose it is a manly instrument.
as for triangle, i think it takes a lot of courage to play!
every second movement key poulan has ever written ends with a triangle hit after a measure or so. if you arent paying attention you make the band look stupid!

The marimba, although the audience has a hard time hearing it, is the coolest thing in the pit. It takes the most skill if played correctly than any other instrument in the pit. But the marimba is just next too the timps because they take snugglebunny of skill and technique as well to play correctly.

I did that for the city Christmas parade last year. No joke.

My director just wanted a four measure triangle "solo" in the closer of last year's show, and we never actually played it in competition because no one could get the choke pattern right at the time.

The marimba is one of the loudest instruments in the pit not counting the electronices. A guy who can play with good technique on a marimba and are good and not ashamed of it, is something that I think is amazing. In my area of bands, you don't see many male marimba players. But when you do, the change is kind of nice.

Now a marimba player that backs away for one sternum cracking smash? That is a man baby!

I am not a big fan on sets in front ensembles during marching season. Indoor season maybe, but full band marching season I don't like. Still sticking with the marimba.

The "rock pod" hands down. I would have loved to have been the guy who was in the pod with '85-'86 Devs. Coolest pit part ever.

If I couldn't do that I would play vibes. I'd give anything to be a great, jammin' vibe guy.

The guy who hits all the china and splash chokes in the Cadets 2000 show. That's the best.

Aux percussion- Bass and Gong, cymbal and tom rack, brake drum, timbale, and all the other fun doodads that go on the traps stand... definitely the manliest and most fun!

I think the guys thats ends up jumping around the most is the person I respect the most. It's more of a challenge to do twenty things at once than just one marimba (which is why vibes > marimba, pedaling and flat bars), so the the guy with the cymbals and toms and other things, yeah I respect that guy (or girl) most.

definetely Marimba, cause if you have a "good" percussionist, who can play the marimba well, and a show with an amazing mallet solo with four mallets, it just makes the audiences jaws drop, and isn't that what we are all going for.

Honestly, I think the player makes the instrument manly, not the other way around.
Also if your normal dynamic of forte
can be heard over the band, without microphones,
I think that instrument is manly.

Bass drum and gong/tam tam played together is an example, as explained before.

A strong marimba player can make the marimba a beast.
Same applies for vibraphone and xylophone players.

If the player is strong enough, he could probably make an Ibo drum in the pit, manly.
That's my take.

The manliest thing would have to be the gong or the bass drum because you get to hit those hard, but since I'm a mallet percussion freak as well as a tenor freak, I'm gonna say the xylophone

Actually, I have to say it is the most piercing of pit instruments. Loudest is something along the lines of a tam-tam.
The tam-tam is now my official most manliest instrument. You know you have a manly instrument, when the guy behind it punches it with his hand when he drops the mallet.

Is a bass marimba that much different from a normal marimba, other than it is a lower pitch.

Last year, we used an anvil in our closer.
It was like, "DONG DONG!"
At the beginning of Taps.
So I would have to say that's pretty manly.
I totally played the xylophone.

I'd have to say rack or-if the pit has one- a drumset. The more stuff that makes clangy loud noise, the better. Look at Blue Devils drumset if you want an example of a drumset that is amazing. I think that thing could create a black hole.

Our manliest instrument is our "Big Bertha" Marimba. It's frame is HEAVY and it has heavy duty wheels.

We had a drumset but it hardly made any noise.
It was a jazz set though --

This.

Also timpani is pretty manly (which is what I hope to get this year.)

Maybe Wade_Quinn was pointing out underlying phallic symbolism in regards to how the microphone relates to masculinity in equipment utilized by the modern front ensemble.

Out of curiosity, has a Lion's Roar ever been used by a pit? How about a conch shell?

The manliest has to be the 3 foot bass bass drum you wack with a 12 pound mallet. You have to put some mass behind that thing. Microphone is pretty great too, if you sound like James Earl Jones..

A stomp tube. I'm not sure if thats the correct name for it but its a 7ft tall, 10in wide PVC pipe which is capped on the bottom. To play it you pick it up and slam it on the ground. The one at our school is tuned perfectly to a concert F

Definitely agree. We were playing at a back to school night, playing Olympiada and there's a part in our arrangement that has a quiet part, then a ffff gong/bass drum hit out of nowhere. we nailed it and i looked into the crowd and saw this asleep old lady awaken suddenly with eyes wide open. it was hilarious.

I guess that would be the bass drum and gong being played at the same time for us. Or maybe the trash cans... Although the fact that I'm female probably negates any manliness. xD

The Manliest instrument... Vibes. They are made of metal and they have a motor. How much more manly can you get?

If your looking for a "drum" go for Timpani, but if your going for a mallet instrument go for Vibes

While the Concert Bass Drum/Gong combo is pretty beast, I'd say Timpani is probably the "manliest" instrument of the pit.
