Three drummer, it seems to me noone would normally play with their pinky out like that, but incase it wasnt a mistake, i'd put your pinky underneath your ring finger so that finger overlaps your pinky a bit.

Keep it up.

actually the technique that threeddrummer uses is an acceptable method of teaching traditional grip. It is not used much anymore, but it was very popular at one time.

Threeddrummer would have perfect technique if the Bridgemen were still around. I used to play like that because that was the way my high school line was taught. I think they used it in Phantom in the early eighties as well. My instructor called it "The Cringe". When I went to Cavies, it took a bit of work to get rid of it.

But, your grip generally looks good. You might think about changing that pinky depending on your corps drumming aspirations.

my basic theory is preserving the naturla shape of the hand as much as possible. i relxas my hand at my side, then bring it up to playing position. i place the stick between my thumb and first finger then curl my first finger around and the pad of my thumb contacts on the side of the first knuckle. my middle finger is very simliar in shape to my first finger. my 3rd and 4th fingers curl into a 'C' shape and the stick rests on the cuticle of the 3rd fingernail

well here is my tech k.. my thumb rest agianst my finger makeing a tear drop shape...while the middle finger giudes the stick never leaveing it.. the stick rests right below the first knuckle for a little extra inner beat controll and the pinky on the outside of the ring finger with a lil bit of the nail sticking up over the nail..(taught by john weldon..center snare for phantom at one time)

o yeah and know light shall show through my fingers and my thump points up in an arch motion...i rotate with the wrist then in with the elbow...using a relaxed position with out even killing the stick at alllllll.. no preasure..just up down up down with gravity

I learned traditional about 2 years ago, and ever since i have had a pretty good left hand(until i had a go-cart accident and messed it up a little at the begging of this season) but Im working it back now, and i was always taught o hold the stick about 4ish inches from the back of the stick but i heard that some drum corps play like an inch from the back of the stick to balance the sound. was wondering where yall hold it

I cant put up a picture, but i learned to hold the stick traditional the way the cavaliers do. Its pretty comfortable, and ive gotten pretty fast with it.

Hoosier, I doubt very seriously that any decent DCI drumlines teach their snares to hold the stick in the LH an inch from the back of the stick. I recall from MANY years ago (1984) seeing the end snare drummer for Suncoast Sound hold his left stick back almost that far - but that's the only example I can recall.

It just doesn't make sense to hold the stick back that far because you don't get hardly any rebound. By the same token, you don't want to hold it too far up either (like halfway, which I regularly see kids doing).

I think you've probably got it about right with the "4ish" inches or so. It varies slightly, depending on the particular stick you're using, but that about where you'll get the best rebound.
