The Fivesters Corps Camp this weekend marked an awesome challenge for the kids and staff. Many of our returning kids are still adapting to the new staff members this year. Our staff is really excited to work with such a wonderful group of kids this year.
The drum majors will be announced soon as well...

Report from the Brass Caption Head Tommy Jamison.
"The kids are really glad to be back and I am glad for them to enjoy something out of this group. The music has its demands and I am sure the demands will be met before mid-season. The Hornline has been working tremendously on the show concept. There will be a feature at one point of the show which will become public as soon as the season starts. These guys truly have what it takes to get out there and march what we ask. I can tell that from what I have seen of them in the past the Brass is moving along the right line. They had a rough year last year but this year we will hope to come out strong."

Report from Percussion Caption Phil Hansen

"The Intensity that I see from the drummers just gives me goosebumps about accepting this position. I believe the guys and girls I have in my drumline can make a top 5 line in Division II. They have been drumming for most of the year since the last season and that is exciting to just think about. The staff did not know how the music will get along with the line but as soon as they read it and started playing it I knew this could be a success. Some of the guys are upset about moving down a division but I believe it is for the best of the corps to do so in this time. This corps has not been around for long and I believe they will be a powerhouse soon enough."

The Fivesters are proud to announce their new drum majors.

Landon Waters, Kat Yills, and Hunter Fraggs.

Landon Waters is the current lead drum major for the Fivesters. He has served as the Brass Sergeant for the Fivesters for the past year. He was the lead drum major for his high school band and the Brass Captain as well. He is currently going through the Music Education program at Western University.

Kat Yills has been drum major for her high school for the past two years. She was also a member of the guard before assuming her major positions. She is thinking about pursuing graphic design as her major in college at MTSU next year.

Hunter Fraggs comes to us from the United Kingdom. He is currently going through an exchange program with his university. He is studying at the University of Tennessee Martin with his concentration on Business.

"A Day in the life of Hunter Fraggs"

Hunter Fraggs is from the United Kingdom, he watched the drum corps activity over there but was astounded when he came to the US through an exchange program. He comes from a musical family of conductors, musicians, and singers. He assumed the responsibility of drum major after finding out a good corps around the area.

Hunter- "I never though I would be doing a drum corps over here, most of my life I wanted to do one in the UK but never found the actual time to join. I am so excited about this oppurtunity given to me in the US and this will make my stay more enjoyable."

Hunter- "As far as going home after, I really cannot express my desire to stay or go. I love my family and I wish I could see them sometime during the summer but they are so far away that it will be difficult. I have no idea if I will just transfer and stay in the US till I finish or just go back after corps is over."

Hunter-"I have played the mellophone and french horn but I am currently just working on being a conductor during my free time. The reason of me choosing business is that things change everyday and I would love to be part of that change unlike conducting an orchestra, the only thing that changes there is the music for now.

"A Day in the life of a drummer"
An close-up in the life of the center snare Ryan Anderson.

Ryan is currently studying in the University of Tennessee in Knoxville where he served center snare for his sophomore and junior year. He is close to finishing his years in high school and this will be his ageout year. He was with the Music City Fivesters last season but was promoted to Drum Captain and center snare this season. He was also the center snare his junior year and well as drum captain. His senior year he played center tenors and fulfilled the spot of drum captain as well. He is currently a music ed major at UTK.

Ryan-"I chose to do corps two years ago and found a spot here in the Fivesters, I was glad to just be marching where I was offered a spot. I do love the Cavaliers and SCV but I was glad to be here and be given such a title that comes with great honor to me."

Ryan-"From the experiences back in high school things have been a little bit better for me. The staff has been so helpful and has contributed twice as what they actually get. I am happy that they do listen to ideas given by members from time to time. Personally, I think that ideas come and go but it really takes more than a couple of minds to find a great one."

Ryan-"This year is my age out year and I will definately enjoy and I will be ready to play every second of it. This is the year to give it my best and have no regrets of marching or messing something up. If I do mess something up then I know that I would have recovered it as best as possible."

"A close-up look at the Visual side of the road"
An interview with Guard Caption Head Austin Hunter and Guard Captain Lacy Asters

Lacy-"Being Guard Captain this year definately made my age out year become a memorable one. Things are hard to do but I always seem to find a spot where everything just comes together and then everything runs smoothly."

Austin-"This is my first year in this organization and I really like how everything takes its place. I love working with these kids that come every camp and give it all they can and then go back to school the next day."

Lacy-"I am definately looking forward to the summer and it will mean that this is the best summer of my life."

Austin-"This summer the Fivesters will unfold a corps that has never revealed themselves before."

An up-close look to the Contras

The "Fivecontras" are all well known in the Nashville Life as the man of air. There are 10 Contras and they have two quintets that perform in the Nashville Area in local clubs and bars. They perform most of the popular music arranged by Contra Captain Rick Garrison. He has become a nice aspect to the Fivesters. Many clubs and bars have donated money towards the Contra line for repairs, horns, etc...

Rick Garrison was glad to receive the Fivesters Member before the Tour Award.

Rick-"A lot of the contras thought it would be a great idea to start our own little group outside of practices since most of us are from the area or close enough to drive here every week at least three times a week. We make this our after corps job."

Rick-"Arranging popular tunes granted us a visit to some of the local clubs in which we offered our services for free first and then asked for donations towards the Fivesters organization."

Rick-"These gigs helped us be in shape for camps and also helped us get to know each other as well. Tad Lorence is the leader of the other quintet we have, they do not perform as much as we do but they still perform at some of the gigs we all have."

Rick-"Hopefully the Contras or the Fivescontras that's our group name can stay and perform for years to come. We think this is going to hopefully get us to Division I and that is our goal right now."

The Music City Fivesters take home show win!!!

Interview with corps director Patricia Hernandez

What is it like for all these kids to get two wins in two days?
-Having them win in NC gave them the hope of winning this home show and many more, they had more confidence in practice and they were very positive towards the staff for helping them get there.

You are currently in 6th overall, what are your goals for this season?
-One of the main goals was to make Division I this year and that was before the season even started, I had two goals and one of them was achieved last night. I wanted for the corps to win their home show because of the competition they were up against. The next goal for the season is to make top 10 at the end of the season.

There are rumors that the Fivesters will not be from Nashville Anymore, is that true?
-Rumors are rumors but this one is still up in the air. We will still be called the Music City Fivesters and the home show will be in Tennessee but we just may move our off-season practice site to West or even East TN, we have been in Middle for a while and I think it's time to give the other guys a shot of a shorter drive to the practice site.

What I hear from a lot of members is that the current staff seems to "work", what are your thoughts?
-Well this staff helped to gain those two wins so this staff is "working", I can say that the current staff will have a spot here next year.

Thank you

The Fivesters Notes of Doom

LIVE from DLO Midwestern!

The Music City Fivesters just performed their show and the members are back to their truck.

We are outside here talking to Drumline Member Tom Handor and Color Guard Rookie Kaytlin Handor.

How did you both feel about this show?
Kaytlin- I am happy to be with this corps my Rookie year. I am here with my brother and we are spending our time together this summer which we never thought it would happen. Performing out there with my brother in the same field as myself is definately an awesome experience.
Tom- I have been in this drumline since the Fivesters started and I loved it and came back every year. I am about to age out next summer and I know which corps I want to do it in. I love the fact that my sister is sharing this experience with me. Now I can tell my family that her and I do things together.

What made you guys join the Fivesters?
K-My brother was my inspiration. I had seen him my sophomore year which was his senior year in high school and I saw the love and character it gave him and I told my parents I wanted to do the same thing.
T-My old drum instructor in high school was in a drum corps and he always told us the things they would do in tour and the things that his friends and him learned. He also told us that it was fun as well as hard work. I talked to him during my start of my senior year and he pointed me out to the Fivesters.

How did both of your parents react about being in the same field this year?
K-They loved the fact they did not have to cheer for two different corps for both of us. Even though next year I will be marching with a different corps I know exactly where I will be aging out at.
T-They had no problem with both of us being here. They told us we had to funded ourselves but it was part of the deal Kaytlin and I made with each other. We both worked at the same place in the fall and spring to pay for corps and we both motivated ourselves to be on this field together.

Motivation was a key in this family reunion, so what would have happened if one of you did not raise their money?
K-I told Tom that we needed to make an agreement and he definately went for it. He said if one of us cannot march then both of us cannot.
T-We definately wanted to make this summer about us both being together, we went through bad times but this is a good time for us right now since we made it. Seat Partners on the bus and everything. Some of the people think that is awesome that brother and sister get along in corps, believe me, we don't all the time.

LIVE from DLO Midwestern

Talking to Mello player James Trois

How did you feel about this show?
James-I felt it was intense for me but I bet that it gets even more intense by the end of the season.

Do you think you will make it to top 8 this summer?
J- We made it once, we can make it again.

The Fivesters Notes of Doom

"On the Road to Quarterfinals"

We are interviewing one of the Contras for the Fivesters.

Tommy Reynolds is here with us.

Interview:
How long have you been with the Fivesters Tommy?

T- This is my Rookie year with the Fivesters, Unfortunately it will be my last considering that my family is moving to California and I am going to start college soon.

What do you think is the best quote from your director?

T- A good one that is always said is "If you are not working hard then you are not working", that is probably one that I will use later on if I am ever in the same position as a director.

Would you ever go back to the Fivesters if you were offered a free ride to the camps and free sponsorship?

T-My parents are in the process of asking some of our family members money for a plane tickets and such. I will have to miss a Friday each month from school but it will be worth it considering that I plan to study hard, if everything comes through I will be back next year but it is not looking like it right now.

Where do you plan on going to college?

T- I plan to go to UCLA.

Thanks Tommy for taking the time to be with us.

A note from the director:

The Music City Fivesters this year have showned true dedication to their practice time and their individual responsibilities. While at some times I have been dissapointed, others have been rewarding. This year we have educated more members than past years with the help of some of our sponsors.

The Fivesters Notes of Doom

The Fivesters have truly showed the commitment of putting each foot forward. They have jumped from Division II to Division I at the beginning of the year, won 3 gold medals, 2 silver medals, and 7 bronze medals and have made it to the Finals in Wisconsin.

We are interviewing the director of the corps.

How did you feel when you heard that the Fivesters were going to be in the Finals?

PH- I was bombarded by the whole corps once they received the news, that moment was an inspiring moment that will hopefully help this corps do well in finals tomorrow.

Did you think the Fivesters would come this far?

PH-Our main goal was reached at the beginning of the season and we did have to work with numbers and such but just placing at a couple of shows was a great accomplishment. I believed we could get this far and the practices towards the Championship week showed the hope was still there.

How do you think they will do in Finals?

PH-We are standing at 7th place right now and I believe we can jump two places at most. However, just making Finals is a dream come true for some of the ageouts we have. I really hate to see a group of young and talented kids depart after tomorrow but hopefully the ride back home on our bus will show a true moment that this corps will keep on going forward and stand by its guard.

How many ageouts do you have this year?

PH-I have 32 ageouts and out of those 17 are Rookies in the Fivesters. However, from conversations with corps members I hear a lot of the other corps members will be coming back this year.

There has been a rumor of moving the corps to the West of TN due to a housing problem, is this true?

PH-We may have to move the corps a little bit West in between Nashville and Memphis but the housing is not the main problem. The reason we are doing that is for the first couple of camps next year. We already have the staff plans for next year planned out there will be three separate audition camps going on and then 1 additional camp in each of the TN areas (West, Middle and East TN).
Hopefully in January we will all get together in the Middle where the corps resides in a brand new Housing Site which was given by one of our anonymous sponsors and we will practice there every camp from there on.

Where is this Housing Site and why does the sponsor want to be anonymous?

PH-We have worked with this particular sponsor for two years now and they have been building us a housing site secretly and will be revealed to the corps members once they get back. They already know this since everyone received the news during Finals Week. The wonderful thing about this site is that we will be able to store things there and the members will be able to have a second home there on the weekends. The land is about 10 acres with two fields and a pavillion area outside. Each member will have a room with 10 more members and they will each have a bed. We will do our traditional "Sleep under the Stars" camp every year but I feel having this spectacular housing site will give us more. I cannot say exactly where it is yet but I can tell you it will be amazing.

The Fivesters Notes of Doom

The Fivesters have moved from 7th place to 5th place during Finals. The whole corps finished their "Dream" Season this year and most of the staff will be coming back next year.

We have the Fivesters Drum Majors Landon, Kat and Hunter plus Percussion Captain Ryan Anderson, Guard Captain Lacy Asters and Brass Sergeant Tommy Hentford.

Hunter, are you going to come back to the Fivesters next year or go back to the UK?

H- I think my time here will be done once I turn 22, I am coming back and plan on transferring to the US permanently during the school year.

Lacy, this is your ageout year, what will you do next?

L-I was offered a spot in a local DCA corps next year but will turn it down considering that I will concentrate more on college right now after having a spectacular season.

Landon, this is an age out year for you as well, any plans?

L- I was actually invited back to be a visual coordinator for the Fivesters next year and will be taking that responsibility as well as teaching the new drum majors during spare times during camps.

Ryan, this is not your ageout year, what will you do next year?

R- I will be aging out next year so I will definately be back.

Tommy, you are going to be in the UK next year, what will you do about drum corps?

T- I will be taking a semester off and will go to UK after I finish next season, directly after.

Kat, will you be coming back next year?

K- I will be going on to a different corps next year due to my family moving to Alabama. I will most likely be doing Spirit but those plans have not been made yet, there is a possibility of me coming back to the Fivesters.
