Hey guys, I just got done practicing, and was wondering if its normal to do a ruff while going on to the next flam during a flam tap. If it isn't a good thing could someone give me an exercise to fix it (if this post is hard to understand sorry. I dont know if i should call it a ruff or a 3 stroke roll with a flam instead of a stroke at the end) thanks guys.

NO, its not.

You probably are too tense with your fulcrums. Try Double stopping sixteenth sixteenth eighth over and over and over as you increase the tempo too. All the while keeping the taps together perfectly. Then when you start up doing Flam taps again, you should be rid of your ruff. IF you have any more questions you can PM me. I will be glad to explain better if you didnt understand the post.

Also try and split up both hands. Play flam taps with one hand on your leg and the other hand on the pad or drum. Then reverse hands. This way you can hear what each hand is suppose to sound like separately and you can pick out the hand separately when you're playing the hands together.

Mavdrums described a technique that I used for just about every rudiment I know.

Practice 3 stroke rolls (RRRLLLRRRLLLRRRLLLRRRLLL)
And then learn how loosen them up so they can sound like
(RrrLllRrrLll), if you know how to use the moeller stroke, this is the time to abuse it.

Then start playing RRR_RRR_RRR_RRR_RRR,and the same thing for left, and then again, fix the dynamics, Rrr_Rrr_Rrr_Rrr, and then same with your left.

Mix it and you got

Copy and paste that into notepad so you can understand it lol. DLO doesn't use Times New Roman, so all the spacing changes according to what characters I use.

Yep, theyre just

RRR RRR RRR RRR R
L LLL LLL LLL LLL (Okay the spacing is messed up NVM)

When R and R are on top of eachother, thats a flam lol. When you play they they should sound exactly like the name FLAM tap FLAM tap FLAM tap FLAM tap. Another way to think of it is a double stroke roll with flams it in. It's just overlapped triples.

Don't worry. I didn't get it at first either

first off, use alot of finger pull. if you try to wrist it out the whole time, they won't sound good. second, instead of just accenting the primary stroke, make it a slight decrecsendo with the last note being about mp. and for anyone that just had a brain fart and don't quite understand what mp means, that would be metzo piano. if you're doing it all forte or fortissimo, then disregard all that was just said in the last few sentences. and cubanochulo has a point. if you can perfect the three-stroke-roll, you're most likely going to get the hang of any kind of flam rudiment. then challenge yourself. do four or five stroke rolls if you want to (yay flamadiddles!).

well, hope you found my ramblings at least slightly helpful and have fun.

I think that you should just stay loose in the fulcrum, and play a normal diddle stroke just adding a grace note in front of it with the other hand. The more complex you make it in your mind, the harder it is. I had this same thing happening when I was teaching our snare drummers how to play inverts. When you think about things differently, it can sometimes help you play them easier. Just my 2 cents.
