I would definitely use the harness. It looks easier to control the drum with

Yay. I'm new here so tell me if I'm doing something wrong.. Hopefully someone will read this soon, because it looks like this thread hasn't been active for almost a year, but..

I understand everyone's opinion about slings vs. harnesses. I, myself would probably choose harness. But at my school, we're debating on bringing back the slings. (Just for show; for competition, we will go with the harnesses).

But the thing I'm confused about is what one of my fellow drumline members told me. (I'm sorry if my description is confusing). He said, "You have to get a completely new drum that is made for a sling." Now, I was in disbelief, because I thought that you could take the harness accessories off the snare drum and you could put the sling accessories on. (Leg rest).

Now, could someone please clarify this for me? Because if we want to use the slings, I would like to know details. And if my belief is correct, could someone tell me what accessories to a drum is needed?

Thank you,
-Kevin P.

You wouldn't need different sets of drums. You can use a sling or harness with any snare drum. You'll just have some hardware to swap out when changing over. To switch from carrier to strap, remove the carrier adapter (or tilters) and attach a leg rest & angle reduction bar. To switch back to a carrier, reverse the process.

harness by far... i have a sling for my personal snare just to offset the cost of buying a carrier and i HATE it even with the leg rest. Don't get me wrong, it works well, but it's just bizarre and unstable.

go with the harness. It becomes much easier to keep control of the drum not to mention it is much more comfortable
