The issues covered are those which are unique to the art of tenor drumming including playing areas, quality of sound, crossovers, scrapes, and much more. Positive aspects of the product (pros):
|
Very detailed, examines all aspects of tenor drumming
|
|
Cons:
|
Exercises are for quint setup only
|

Bill Bachman did a wonderful job of taking all aspects of tenor drumming and breaking it down for the readers. From playing zones to the X-Y axis to scrape patterns, it's all there, explained in excellent detail.
The book includes exercises that are chop building and challenging. Scrape patterns including inside circles, outside circles, Z patterns and arounds are all covered. Making it through these exercises will definitely guarantee that you will be familiar with the layout of the drums and be able to execute almost any piece of music that is thrown at you.
Bill Bachman also includes a number pieces and etudes that are from the intermediately hard to extremely difficult levels.
Quad Logic, while aimed at players of all levels, it is more appropriate for the Intermediate and above players, at least as far as the exercises are concerned. The text portions, on the other hand, are great for everyone.
The exercises are all written for a quint setup, and while this is not much of a problem for players that use sextets, it is difficult for those who don't have the latest and greatest. Programs with older quad setups will have a hard time adapting the exercises to only four drums while maintaining the technique building integrity and goals of the exercise.

Positive aspects of the product (pros):

Great exercises, excellent reading
|
|
Cons:

Exercises don't apply to all skill levels

This book was written by, in my opinion, one of the greatest tenor players to ever to have strapped on a set of tenors. Bill Bachman has had the experiences and has the knowledge, and is kind enough to share with us what he has learned over the years.
This book contains some great exerices that work all aspects of tenor drumming, along with some excellent reading about technique, playing zones, and more.
I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to improve their tenor drumming skills!

Exhaustive study of the instrument from start to finish.

Not for new drummers, or the faint of heart.

The definitive tenor drum technique book, Quad Logic is a must-have for any aspiring tenor drummer.
Okay, now I've got that out of the way - you'd better have a basic foundation in rudimental drumming, because while this book does start with basics, those sections are written more for instructors than students. This isn't the kind of book for someone wanting to start learning to tenor-drum out of thin air - there'd better be some background in drumming or a live instructor to assist.
However, this book covers absolutely everything in modern tenor drumming - finger, hand and arm positions, playing areas, equipment setup and tuning, rehearsal techniques, warmups, exercises and solo music.
The solo music enclosed is not for the faint of heart - it's advanced college / DCI / WGI level stuff, to be sure (maybe even a smidge beyond that). It would have been nice to see easier-level stuff included, as benchmarks for developing drummers (such as after learning these techniques, you can play this solo - sort of thing).
Still, this is an incredible reference book for learning just about every aspect of tenor drumming, and I would recommend it to any tenor drummer that asks.
