Description:
|
Features:
The FS-1 marching snare drumstick, like all Innovative Percussion drumsticks, is constructed of heartwood. This wood results in a denser and slightly heavier stick with excellent durability and increased response. The FS-1 is designed with a comfortable diameter for any age level and a short taper for increased control and balance. The oval bead creates a full sound and excellent rebound. The FS-1 is perfect for marching snare drummers of any age.
Specs:
- Heartwood Hickory
- Oval Bead
- Short Taper
- Length: 17"; Diameter: .698"

Obviously, I'm a big fan of the FS-1s (www.fs-1.com, even though it has nothing to do with the drumstick, it was created in it's honor).
I love these drumsticks. They have a good taper, and an articulate sound. Since they're made of heartwood of hickory, they are more evenly balanced than other sticks. They have a tendency to break rather than crack or sheer.
Since it's from a different part of the tree, this hickory doesn't crack or splinter as much as, say, Ralph Hardimon's. Instead, they will either dent with in impression from the spot you hit, or completely break. I've never had a pair of FS-1s splinter in a messy fashion. I've had A pair splinter, but it was a clean splinter and would have completely broken the stick had I hit just a little harder. This is both an advantage and disadvantage. For starter's, this guarantees a better quality of sound. Most people don't like to throw sticks away (I know I don't). So when a stick starts to splinter, I normally use it until it's completely dead. But, that normally leaves me with one stick feeling and sounding different than the other. With FS-1s, you can be assured that's not likely to happen. Your stick is probably going to break, and cleanly. This also means you don't have chips of wood flying all over the place, and the stick doens't like horrible when it's near it's end. Most sticks start to splinter and it begins looking really bad, but FS-1s just snap, so you maintain some sort of uniform look and apperance before it dies.
The tip gives the stick a full, articulate sound. And the taper puts a little more weight on the end. The sticks are quality manufactured, I've never owned a bad pair. Also, since IP was mainly for orchestral percussion mallets, they have a better feel for more orchestrated sounds. At least, in my opinion, the IP sticks are more orchestrated and more harmonic than other companies'.
Also, the FS-1s aren't custom-made sticks, so you can be sure you won't get anything weird. Most custom sticks are custom for a reason. Either the artist wants a special sound, feel, or look. And those sticks may be great for that purpose, but sometimes if you're playing something that changes mood a lot, custom sticks aren't the weigh to go. Go with the generic stuff.

can be weighted differently

I bought a pair of FS-1's a year ago and loved them. They lasted a long time and they were great. I got a new pair, however, and the two sticks were weighted completely differently. They are somewhat light, and I don't like the sound you get when you tape them. GREAT for young players though.

good sound, good weight, rebound

slight chipping

i've been using these as my main sticks for a few months. they have great sound, and rebound smoothly. my only complaint is that with some use, they sort of split or splinter off in little strips, which i suppose is better than just completely breaking, but still annoying.
