Positive aspects of the product (pros):
|
Articulate bead, weight matched well
|
|
Cons:
|
Not pitch matched, bead and shaft wore quickly
|
|
The period of review for this product was roughly 14hrs of rehearsal on a drum and a month's worth of work on a pad.
Pros:
-Lighter weight for indoor use
-Length keeps the "outdoor" feel
-Bead shape articulates well
-Weight matched
Cons:
-Shaft and Bead wore quickly
-Pair not pitch matched
-Thicker shaft impeded rebound
I would recommend this product.
The only thing I truly did not like about this stick was that it is designed with the lighter/quicker approach in mind, but the thicker taper to resist against ping shots noticeably effects the rebound.
I believe the rebound could be increased by keeping the same stick design, just shortening the shaft by a half an inch.
The bead shape allows for a pretty crisp attack and the stick did move well in the hands.
The weight matching of the sticks was near perfect, although the pitches differed. Not too apparent in a line, but still evident.
These sticks initially felt great on a pad, but after being taped up and about 8hrs on a drum, they were shot. Neither of them broke, but the shaft and bead wore significantly, giving them a "dead" feeling.
What sold me on these sticks was their slightly smaller diameter which fit the hands of my younger students well and the denser hickory still gave a solid sound on a drum.
I usually prefer the sound of vic firth's signature corpsmasters because of the more focused sound caused by their painting process, but the timmy's held their own.
My final grade: B+

Impossible to find in Canada

The line I teach plays strictly indoors. When I took over, we used Ralphie Jr's, but quickly moved to the Innovative Percussion Indoor Mac's. Being a long time fan of anything Tim Fairbanks has done, when I heard he was given his own stick, I bought a pair right away. I tested it out for a week or so, and soon bought pairs for the whole line.
This stick offers a small enough feel to accomodate smaller hands (age group is 12-18), while still providing a full sound, something that is lost in a lot of today's indoor sticks. The taper gives a quick feeling, without losing control of the stick (Ralphie Jr's are difficult to control at high tempos due to their light weight and thin feel).
I can honestly say there isn't anything I would change about this product, except make IP more readily available in Canada!
*EDIT* Since my review, I've learned that IP has made a deal with Yamaha Canada, for distribution nationwide. Couldn't be happier!
