Description:
|
Fifty percent softer than conventional pads and no compromise in rebound, make the Snare Pad the only serious choice for drummers who want to execute accents properly.
To achieve snare drum-like rebound the conventional rubber must be hard. Because of their hard playing surface, gum rubber pads limit the force a drummer can exert. RTOM's engineers decided to look elsewhere for answers to this age-old problem.
The Moongel Snare Pad material is 50% softer than conventional Gum rubber pads, which can introduce shock to the hands and wrists. Long term this can cause repetitive stress disorders, the Snare Pad virtually eliminates this problem. Typically a 50% softer pad would not produce the rebound of a snare drum, but RTOM‚s unique Moongel material still maintains the rebound and flexural response of a snare drum, no gum rubber material can offer this performance characteristic.
The Snare Pad is 7 inches in diameter and incorporates a 1/4" brass insert for stand mounting.

Pad-hands can develop if used exclusively
|
|
After I bought my original e-pad, RTOM had renamed it the Moongel pad. They have just recently (winter of 2002) redesigned the Moongel pad to a much different design that includes a suction cup on the bottom, however this older model can still be found in stores.
The e-pad/Moongel snare pad is a 7" gum rubber playing surface glued onto a pressed paper/cardboard backing, but don't let that turn you off. I have dropped mine onto concrete and down stairs many times, and I have never had to glue any pieces back on. The bottom has a threaded hole in the middle for mounting onto a stand or rack and it also has a soft foam ring to prevent marring any surface that the pad is rested on.
The rubber used for the e-pad/Moongel pad is much softer than that used for other pads, and as a result, very little noise is generated while playing. A side effect of the soft rubber is the tendency to develop "pad hands" if used to practice exclusively. The rebound feels a little more like that of mylar than fiber heads, yet it still lets you work on speed and accuracy. I'd suggest using this pad (in conjunction with a standard pad) when you are in sound sensitive environments.
So given those issues, why do I recommend it? Because it is the peacekeeper. My wife and coworkers do not mind when I play on it because there is so little noise. It's so quiet that I can practice in the same room as other people and everyone can still hear each other or the TV. It's small enough that I can fit it in my laptop bag when I head to work, and I can fit it in my luggage when I go on trips, without having to leave four pairs of my wife's shoes at home. It's also perfect for bus rides while on tour, since it doesn't take up much of the precious overhead storage and the rest of the drum bus can get some sleep while you're fixing that lick that you haven't gotten down quite yet.
If you are in need of a practice pad that's easily transportable, won't make your family or neighbors kill you when you chop out on it, this is the one.

Slight durability issue

I have the new version of the pad which has a suction cup on the bottom. When I first bought the pad the suction cup rocked and i could pick up my FFX snare drum up with it, but after a while the suction cup began to misform. They expect you to put the pad back into some sort of "retainer ring" after you're done using it. If you're like me, you're never done using the pad, let alone have time to think about putting it back in its case.
Also, if you try rimshots, the gum rubber will start to get holes and eat away. A couple more years and i think the padding on the rim of this pad will probably be able to come clean off. However, this is only because I overuse the pad with rimshots sometime.
Very good for keeping the peace, but if you can use a real feel, i'd take one of those over it (because you want to be heard when you're jammin with friends)
***EDIT AFTER 3 MONTHS***
I changed my rating to an 8 because the durability issue effects quite a bit. since the whole pad is covered by the rubber material, rim shots deteriorate it and eventually gets ruined.
Still a good pad, but if you want something that will last you years, get a real feel.
