From the HQ Percussion website
Since 1988, RealFeel has meant the finest practice pads in the world, for students just learning to hold the sticks all the way up to the top recording and touring professionals.
Only the finest, first-quality materials are used on all RealFeel Practice Pads and we keep the playing surfaces in their natural state so as not to hide any defects. The adhesive we use is so strong that we guarantee that the gum and neoprene playing surfaces will not come off!
The soft, pure gum rubber surface is quiet and best for practice emphasizing speed, bounce and stick control.
The harder neoprene surface is a “chopbuilder” and is good for hand calisthenics and for practicing when you want to hear each stroke.
RealFeel Practice Pads are the choice for great drummers throughout the world who know that RealFeel Is The Real Deal!
Single-Sided:
Available in 6" (RF-6GM) and 12" (RF-12G) sizes, each with a pure gum rubber playing surface and a special non-slip material on the bottom. The 6" model can also be mounted on a cymbal stand.
Double-Sided:
Available in 6" (RF-6D) and 12" (RF-12D) sizes, each with pure gum rubber on one side and neoprene on the other side.

Easy to carry around, a close representation of your actual drum and a great chop builder.

I have the 12" double sided pad. It has been with me now for going on two years. This pad is very easy to travel with seeing as how it can easily fit into yout backpack or just carried under your arm. After a lot of practice and abuse the pad has held up great. Other than the pad getting darker from dirt and sunlight this pad is built tough. The only problem I have had out of it is pad hands. If you play on both a pad and drum often this shouldn't be a problem.
The softer/quiet side of the pad gives you a nice rebound which I feel gives a more realistic drum feel. The harder/louder side is a great chop builder. This same side is also nice to work out any ticks in your playing. Overall a very good product and I recommend it to anyone looking for a good practice pad.

Extremely useful. Fun to use. The only problem I had with it was the adhesive used loosens a bit on the sides (I have a single-sided 12" by the way)and corners. But, that doesn't get in the way at all. It's rather durable, and the Pad gets better with time. Or it may be that I'm just improving. It's an excellent exercise tool for anyone.

I own the 12" double sided pad and I am in love with this pad. It's by far the best feeling pad I've ever used. It seems to me that in the first week or so (depending on how much you drum) the pad feels a little soft. But after that, the feel just gets better and better. I love this pad becuase it will last almost forever. It may chip around the corners due to the pressed wood used for the pad but that really doesn't matter because this pad is so big that you can spare a few inches on the corner. I highly highly recommend this pad for any drummer. Snare player or not, it's just a great product to have.

This was the first pad I ever bought, and I guess I am lucky I made such a good choice, this pad is great. I have had it for awhile now and it is in great shape. The gum rubber side has the rebound much like a Remo marcihng snare head. The only thing that I still have a problem with is the black side. While it is helpful with hear what you are playing, its rebound isn't so good and I am not too sure what they were trying to accomplish with it.

I love this practice pad. I've had mine for about 8-10 years; I can't remember exactly when I bought it.
The black side is my favorite. I don't like playing on the cream colored side because there's so much rebound. The pad just plays much better than many of the other pads on the market.

I have had my Real Feel pad for about 12-13 years, from when they didn't have a doublesided yet (that I knew of), and it had held up great!
I drew a crest on with a bic roundstick pen that I have to redraw every 3-4 years, but it doesn't wear off easily. The non-slip bottom has shrunken from when it was in hot cars, and it slides on goo-glue when warm/hot, but always re-adheres. The gum rubber has hardened on top, but just a thin layer, and it doesn't affect the feel any, just makes it slicker (actually a little more like a drum head) as it ages. The corners are all chiped, but none enough the affect the rubber, and I have tossed it down fairly hard at times.
I would say this pad FAR exceeds the old style tuned pads with foam in them as well as the old hard rubber pads, but I haven't compared it to a Heavy-Hitter or any of the other new pads since I really don't need a new one.

Positive aspects of the product (pros):
|
quiet, cool shape, excellent feel
|
|
Cons:
|
logo, get's dirty fast, construction
|
|
I recently picked up a real feel because my parents were yelling at me that my heavy hitter was too loud. Theoretically, if my parents thought it was loud, my future room mates in college would too, so I wanted to be prepared.
I've always expected good things fom real feel because of other reviews and the popularity of real feel in my school. I was satisfied when I actually started using it. However, I did happen to shell out 10 bucks more than I did for my heavy hitter.
Real feels definitely are a quiet pad. I can barely be heard by others when I'm practicing, which is always a good feature in a pad. I'd say the only drawback is if playing with a friend, it would be harder to tell if you 2 are clean or not. It's an insignificant note because a pad is generally meant for one person to use.
The term real feel is very accurate, it provides a good rebound to match a drumhead's rebound, I have yet to play on a real drum for a good month so I have no opinion on the pad hands dilemma.
The octagonal shape is very awesome, though this is a cosmetic thing. The gum rubber also gets dirty really easily but again, this is cosmetic.
The particular pad I bought happened to have the HQ logo engraved at the top of the pad and once again, this is a cosmetic feature I particularly dislike.
One of the real cons of this pad is the construction. I've only had it for about a week and the gum rubber is starting to peel off, the paint is falling off some sides and the octagonal corners are chipping. This is not the result of poor treatment, I have left this pad in my room ever since I took it out of the box.
Overall, ability to practice quietly but efficiently gives this real feel a strong 8. The drawbacks are mainly related to appearance and though the price was a bit high, I happened to buy it from a local retailer and did not search for a cheaper online price. The rebound and volume make this pad an excellent choice for a lone rudimental player.

This is probally the most used pad on the market. It's very durable. My school's instructor has had his for over 10 years. I use the black side for practicing my music, and the gum side for screwing around and when I need to be quiet. It's pretty expensive for a practice pad but if it lasts 10 years, I guess it's worth it.

I bought this because i needed something that was quieter than my VF Heavy Hitter pad. I couldn't practice at night nor would i be able to practice on the upcoming 24 HOUR bus ride for a band trip (and what other way would i kill time?) I pulled it out of the box and played it in the store and immideatley knew why so many people use it. It's really a great product.
The brown side of the pad is very quiet and actually feels like a real drum, but not a kevlar one. It feels closer to mylar, and if you don't have access to a drum freqently i see how it could give you a slight case of pad hands. The feel isn't as realistic as the VF pads, but it's made for practacing music, memorizing things, and muscle memory. The gum rubber is really easy to play on and if you just want to drum quietly or play through music it's great.
The black side is an amazing chop worker. The first time i tried to play a roll on it with Scott Johnson sticks (which give you less rebound) it sounded really horrible, but after awhile it taught me to open rolls more and play with more power, and now when i go to my drum things like rolls are much more even and clean. Try playing double beat really fast or alot of rolls, and other exercises and watch your chops improve ten fold.
Another thing i noticed is that the construction of this pad is better than most others. It has a solid piece of wood in between the neoprene and gum rubber and when yoy sit it on your lap to play on it, you can really feel that it's a quality product. Other models with particle board are too loud, and they chip when you drop them, but not this one. Make sure you get one of the ones with actual wood, as i've seen particle board versions.
So if you really want a pad that can give you a serious workout and be quiet and easy to play, the Real Feel is great. I definitley would reccomend it!

I simply love this pad. It has really helped to develop my playing. Being that it is double-sided, I can work my chops on the neoprene side or practice quietly on the rubber side. I couldn't ask for anything else in a pad. Every rudimental percussionist should have one.

Does not fit on a 13" drum, glue comes off after a while

This is an awesome pad. It feels great, and is just a really useful thing to have around. It does not fit perfectly on a 13" drum (I have the tan model, but I think the new gray pad will fit) but that is not a huge problem. The glue also comes off after a while, but that is easily fixed.

I just got my ReelFeel last week & was very excited about it. That exitement didn't last very long when I began to play on it. There was absolutley no real drum feel to the pad at all. After a couple of minutes of playing on the pad I was amazed at the notes i could turn out...
But when I transfered over to my actual drum, I felt like I had never played on one before. I didnt realize what was wrong until I realized which pad I had been playing on. Needless to say I do not recoment this pad
