6666Maxheads.jpg

Description: Another Remo first, BLACK MAX™ heads combine the strength and high-tension benefits of an advanced, woven Aramid fiber with the weather-resistance and musical benefits of competition-proven Mylar® film. This (13"–14") snare head combines the strength and tuning ease of Remo’s crimped aluminum hoop with a steel insert ring.

Thoroughly field-tested by champion drum and bugle corps and university bands, BLACK MAX™ heads were designed in response to the trend of slightly lower batter head tensioning. BLACK MAX™ creates a head with added durability and stick response plus a warmth and feel that’s easier on the hands and more musical for the ears. Playing technique or styles don’t need to be changed for the improved sound, feel, and performance this head offers.

The Cavaliers used BLACK MAX™ heads for their 2001 DCI-winning performance.

*From the Remo website

These heads are now available with a mylar bottom coating for use with upper-snare mechanisms such as those on the Yamaha MTS snare drums.

Pros: crisp sound, good rebound, no need to crank excessively
Cons: uhhh....

we have these on our yamaha sfzs at school and i love them. Im not sure how old the heads are but they sound brand new. When ever we go to workshops the techs always like our sound the best. They have a nice crisp sound without a whole lot of overtone... it sounds like a snare not a really high tom. You dont have to tighten these alot either like you have to with the falams. The best way i can describe their sound is that it is more of a crack and less of a poing.

Pros: Wonderful Tone and Feel
Cons: BlackMax end up with a white spot after time

These heads are the best thing to happen to marching snares since the advent of the free-floating shell – Finally a warm and musical head that won’t disintegrate under heavy use! My first experience with them was when we put them on some old Stingray Unishell snares (which most people know I utterly despise) and it actually made them sound half-decent. When we eventually move to Pearl FFX’s the sound was gorgeous! I prefer them with a mylar bottom head – like the Evans MX7 with the overtone ring and a staccato disk – the warmth and articulation from this combination really makes a small line sound full.

Pros: Fiber sound with Mylar feel
Cons: None encountered yet

I swapped out a FalamII from my Yamaha sFz for a 14" BlackMax I bought off ebay. The head was brand new in the Remo box without a scratch on it.

What a pleasure to drum on this head! It's got a great feel when played on and has a very nice response. I have experienced no wrist pain while playing, which is a big plus over other heads that I have played on.

I can only judge the sound based on what I have heard when other groups have used these heads. I have not had the opportunity to listen to it the way I have it tuned on my drum sans earplugs from a distance, however I have been very impressed with the sounds coming from the groups who have used them.

Pros: Verrry nice
Cons: none

An excellent choice for your snare. My line has used Falam II's in the past and they have provided an average amount of satisfaction. But we recently switched to Black Max's and have been 100% satisfied ever since. I love it.

Pros: Good crisp sound
Cons: None

We had used Flam II's last year and switched to the BlackMax this year and I love them. Nice clean sound that I like and holds up very well. I will play with these as long as I play.

Pros: Beautiful sound and tone
Cons: Stick marks

I have a pearl FFX 14inch snare drum so the black max sounds crisp with great rebound and a softer feel on your hands. I previously had a Falam and the switch is amazing. What I like about the head the most is that you dont have to tighten it as much as kevlar heads and it sounds much better. The only bad thing I have to say about the Black Max is that it develops nasty stick marks as soon as you begin to play on it and that really destroys the physical appearance, But other than that..this is by far the best drumhead I have ever played on. I Definatly recommend.

Pros: Easier on your hands than falams, yet same great sound... and more.
Cons: Some ugly stick marks, and head-life...

I switched from the Falam IIk ebony heads to this head, and the feel is completely different... for the better.

These heads don't need to be cranked ridiculously high like the Falam IIk Kevlar heads to get a good sound. They work very well on an Pearl FFX, and (at least for me) give a full, warm, and dark sound.

The downside is that after playing for a while on the head, white stick marks develop on the head that ruins the appearance (doesn't affect sound quality at all though, which is all I really care about). Also, these heads don't last as long as Remo's other heads; the Blackmax has a tendency to stretch very quickly, so don't crank it too high.

Pros: Good sound
Cons: none

It's not common to find a head that both looks and sounds good. The Black Max has a nice crisp sound that easy to get uniform on multiple drums and it looks classy too. The only negative is that after continuous playing, the center fades to gray, but if you're playing this much, you should probably just get a new head

Pros: Great Feel, Sound
Cons: Absorb Heat from Sun

I bought the Remo Black Max head this year for the first time. What a difference it makes! No other head sounds this great. By far the best marching snare drum head on the market.

Pros: large tuning range, looks cool
Cons: that white spot thing...

these are probably my favorite heads out on the market right now
my school uses white maxes, and my personal snare came with a black max on it
these heads are awesome, they sound just fine whether you completely crank the snot out of them or if you just leave em soft.
although i love the looks of a new black max, after playing on one for a while it develops a faded gray/white area.
also (haven't seen this on black maxes) if you put the remo logo on the 'buzz roll side' of the drum, it wears off. no biggie, especially since most lines put the remo logo on the close side

Pros: Feel and Sound
Cons: Stick Marks

This drumhead is amazing, I personally have never used any other drumheads besides the white/black maxes. They have a soft feel yet they provide excellent rebound. The sound is just so full, warm, and crispy. The only thing that I can complain about is the stick marks, but even though they show me where I have been playing and how good I stay in the center, so atleast they are to some use.Hehe anyways I give this product a *10*
