Heavy Hitter Marching Bass Pad
The Vic Firth Heavy Hitter Bass Pad features the original “barbell” design which mounts on a cymbal stand for vertical and quiet practice of the marching bass drum. The player can see stick angles, stick heights and “side-to-side line up” while practicing on a 14” wide set-up — just like an actual marching bass drum. The Basspad offers sturdy steel construction, a mounting post designed to fit all brands of cymbal stands and 1/4” thick gum rubber pads for a realistic feel.

I really like this pad, only had a couple of days so far and its already helped me out.
Its great for developing your technique and checking all your angles, because unlike playing a real drum you can actually see your hands to adjust. Also, the fact that it makes a different sound when you hit off center is very nice because it helps you develop the muscle memory for keeping your hands exactly centered.
The pad is fairly quiet, however. I normally practice outside, and sometimes there are buses going by and whatnot. This was never much of a problem with my real feel pad. I was always able to hear myself okay, even on the softer side. However with this pad it can be a problem. Its also sometimes hard to hear tap passages even in fairly quiet settings. On the plus side, however, i can practice in my dorm now without any complaints.
It is larger than a conventional pad, but for those of you concerned about portability, you should know that i can fit this pad, a 12" real feel, sticks, music, books/papers and other school stuff all in one backpack (barely). The stand, however, i have to carry separately.
Also, this thing is built to last. Its kinda heavy, but its incredibly solid, much more so than my real feel which is flaking away at the edges. I'm actually suprised this thing doesn't come with a warranty of some kind.
All in all, a great product, i highly reccomend it if you are a serious bass drummer. Nothing else short of a real drum can substitute for building chops if you're trying to reach a very high level with your bass drumming.

With in 2 days I had improved on the right technique and the center of the head placement.
My only real problem is that is does not fit every cymbal stand like mine, it was too small for the stand. If i played hard it would move around a little bit but that was a minor thing for me.
