I purchased the 14" model last summer at the Indianapolis DCI Regional. Great concept and very slick-looking. My only complaint is that the top plastic layer has developed a starburst-like crack pattern, even though I keep my heights at 3-5". I hear this is common for this pad. Overall, it's a nice pad with good rebound. The cracks to me are just small and cosmetic. The overall holographic properties and design on the pad make up for this.

I bought 2 of these at WGI's in San Diego last April because I liked the shape (works well on a stand) and it had more of a high-tension feel than the typical Yamaha/Xymox/Pro-Mark snare pads. However, within a couple of weeks, both pads had developed severe cracks on the playing surface. While I admit that the cracks don't render the pad unusable, I will say that it DOES affect the feel of the pad (and not in a good way). I was very disappointed and will not be buying any others with this type of playing surface (like a hard-topped mouse pad). Ralph's a great guy, but he should withdraw his name from this product as soon as is contractually feasible!
UPDATE: At WGI Finals this year, I stopped by the Xymox booth and told the rep. about my troubles with this pad. They gave me a packet of info. with which to process a replacement of my defective pads. Also, they showed me that the new Ralph pads don't use the 3D surface and are much more durable. I haven't started the replacement process yet, but I'll update later with the results. To be continued...
OK, so I called Xymox about the problem and they basically had me send in an order form with a check for $8 to buy 2 replacement laminates (since I have 2 of these pads). It took about 2 weeks to get the laminates and I painstakingly pealled off the cracked bits of the old 3D laminate and then carefully stuck on the new ones. The end result is 2 pads that are basically fully refurbished.
While I will say that the new surface does appear to be much more durable than the original 3D surface, time will tell if it actually holds up under daily use. As far at the feel of the new surface goes, it's taking some getting used to. It's MUCH harder than your standard gum-rubber pad surface and a bit less responsive. Accordingly, you have to work a little more not to scratch low-volume diddles. However, the more I play on it, the more I'm warming up to it. Accordingly, I've changed my rating on this product from a 1 to 7.

Surface develops cracks, looses bead that cause snare sound

This pad and I dont get along. After regular use the blue surface cracks. It's not mearly cosmetic, it seems to effect the feel of the pad. On the bottom of the pad there is a metal plate that holds metal beads inside the pad. I've found that the plate can come loose or bend, allowing beads to fall out if you not extra careful.

My cousin has this pad so I've had the opportunity to use it a number of times. The first time I played on it, I was amazed at how real it felt. The Kevlar-like surface and snare sound make you think you're actually playing on a drum. The only flaw, which is cosmetic, is that the surface develops cracks. This is only cosmetic and doesn't affect the rebound.

I bought this pad 3 years ago, and for the first year it was great. I didn't develop "pad hands", as this pad had as close to a drum-like touch I'd felt on a pad. After some time, the cracks others have mentioned appeared, which I felt took away from some of the feel the pad had. As I kept using it, the metal plate on the bottom of mine warped, causing the ends to become loose and letting some beads out. I have fixed the bottom, but by now the top has cracks basically winding across the entire surface of the pad, and the top layer of material is starting to peel off. Furthermore, the feel of the pad is still gradually approaching that of a Reel Feel, which doesn't bode well with someone who bought this pad as alternative to a Reel Feel.
