Description:

For use with high-tension Kevlar heads, the SFZ marching snare drums are designed for precise articulation, powerful projection, and durable performance.
Shell
The 6-ply birch shell provides bright attack with body and ensures strength snare-side tension.
Air-Seal System
The Air-Seal System way of manufacturing ensures the shell starts round and stays round; an in-round shell tunes clearer and provides a pure fundamental tone.
Suspension Ring
The extra thick (thickest you can find) suspension ring stays round even under the torque of Kevlar heads. It eliminates stress on the shell and is tall enough for use with a plastic drum head.
Rims
The rims are made from die-cast, high-strength aluminum in a soild design. They stay round even with the high torque of Kevlar heads and provide even tuning, yet they are lightweight and durable.
Stabilizer Power Posts
The Stabilizer Power Posts maintain alignment of the tube lugs to make bottom head changes easy. They support the tube lugs to withstand stick-clicks and accidental hits, and also cut shell overtones that blur articulation.
Strainer System
The strainer on the SFZ snare drum is a quick release system that allows quick and easy bottom head changes.
Tension Rods and Washers
The 6 mm. tension rods with double steel washers, ensure smooth and stable tuning at high tension without breaking.
Feet
Three protective feet protect the snare mechanism and bottom head.
Gravity Guards
Gravity Guard tension rod locking nuts maintain setting of bottom head tension rods, and slow fallout of unevenly tuned rods.

Yamaha's sFz series snare drums are available in both standard 14" and smaller 13" models for younger groups and indoor venues.
These drums are meant to take the high tension tuning of today's kevlar and aramid fiber drumheads. The shell is not a truly freefloating design in that it is held in place by the stabilizer post connected hardware. This prevents added strain on the snareside head by transfering the weight of the birch shell to the stabilizer posts, thus maximizing all tension on the bottom head towards tuning. This also keeps the alignment of the snare bed in it's proper position.
I bought my personal white 14" sFz used for $300, but it sounds just as good as new. The school I tech purchased the 13" model drums 3 years ago to accomodate the smaller players. Other than having the feet occasionally fall off, I have had no problems with them.
There is a retrofit kit available for $130 to turn the sFz into an MTS.

i just got my SFZ and it is a beautiful drum. through the sending process my drum was untuned and sounded very nasty but after i evened out the lugs and adjusted the snares, it started sounding great. i would definately recommend this drum to anyone looking to buy a snare. my line uses these and has had no problems with them and the one i just got seems flawless. they respond very well to a little tuning. it's worth the little extra cash to get it

Our drumline has been using sfzs for about four years and they still look and sound great. The only problems we've had is some of the bottom head bolts falling off and the legs getting loose.

I have had my 13" sFz for about six years now and I have never been happier in my life. It looks and sounds every bit as good now as when I bought it (if not better!!!!) Both lines I have taught uses them and I never have to fight with the drum to get them to sound in tune with each other, and they really take a beating. The gravity guards on the bottom head lugs keep them from falling out so quickly and keep the head in tune longer. WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!

Our school bought 3 of these this year. After marching one for abut a year, I got to say these are the best snares I've marched. The sound is totally awesome, the hardware is totally reliable(cough...ffx), and it's an extremely light drum coming from the old ludwigs.

This is by far the best snare I've ever used. My schools line uses 13" Red Forest drums, and my personal snare is a 14" Blue Forest. These drums are built like bricks, they can really withstand a LOT of abuse/playing. They last a long time too. My school has had their drums for 5 years and they still sound as good as when we first got them in 2000. The best part about these drums though, is the weight. 14 lbs. for the 13" and 16 for the 14". I put a laquer enamel on the snare guts for my drum to get the sound I prefer and if you do the same, I would recommend these drums because the guts really respond well to laquer (f it's applied right). Overall a very good instrument, I give it a 10 out of 10.

Really good, I got it the 1st day and opend up the box, I was very impressed on how well it was packed. I took off the top head and replaced it with a White Max head. Then I took the bottom head off and replaced it with a Falams II head. This drum is amazing in sound, and has a nice, solid sound. I love this drum. Our school uses Pearl FFXs and I would totally have a SFZ over a FFX.

I got mine from a drum corp and from the wear they take from being played on all summer, My drum is still in Great condition!! I would recommend it to anyone from Jr. High to College.

The reason I gave this product a 7 was because of the non free floating drum shell. This drum is not truely a free floater meaning it has hardware attach to the shell (i.e Strainer, little post) This drum is one of the hardest drum to tune. The strainer connected to the shell gives in limited space for drummers with big fingers making it hard to play with the knobs. But I have heard decent Sfz before but the one I had to tune was not one of it.
The price of this drum is crazy, a lot more than the FFX.
But This drum ovrall quality is great, it is made by an all out fantastic company by Yamaha.

I acquired a sFz that was about 3 years old when i got snare in my drumline. The sound is excellent, and the ring handles rimshots extremely well. The only downside is the high price, which costs more than other snares, but imo, the higher price is well worth it.

This is my drum of choice, I have a 13" and a 14" that I am restoring. They look great, are easy to tune, sound very nice, and they are durable.
