Pros: inexpensive, high-quality, completely free-floater, product security, 100% maple, relatively light, lots of optional colors/types/etc., great carriers to add on, shiny hardware finish
Cons: Pearl doesn't offer dual-snare, tedious to replace bottom heads

The Pearl FFX 14x12 (the one I've used) is really great for the price range. I'd recommend it for high school lines, that don't have the huge budget that college or drum corps. lines have. But, even in those cases, the FFX is an awesome snare drum (you can see them in use in my DCI Div. I corps i.e~ Santa Clara Vanguard). It has a great sound, it's durable, and inexpensive. Pearl is a big company and has been around for a long time, so you can be assured that the product will be well supported, and there is a huge FFX community. The snare drum is great, the only completely free-floater snare drum that I know of (no equipment is attached to shell). The drum is pretty light (Pearl says 17lbs), and I prefer the feet on the FFX over any others because they protect the snare unit too. The throw-off is easy to reach, although the other adjustment isn't as easy. You can get tons of great carriers that work with it (mag-tube carrier), and it comes in tons of finishes so you can definately find one that'll match your school colors.

The snare has 16 snare guts as opposed to Yamaha, who has 10(?). Also, all of the hardware is shiny. Although this may be a pretty small aspect of purchasing a drum, it's a really great addition. When i compared it to an sFz I saw a coupla months ago, I noticed none of their hardware was shiny. The shiny, glossy look of the drum gives it that "brand-new" look, is easy to polish, visually and aesthetically pleasing, and makes you look more proffessional.
I've never encountered a defective FFX, and, to my knowledge, all of their equipment seems secure and durable.

Cons:
Although the company is innovative, they havn't come out with a dual-snare FFX like Yamaha's mts. Also, the bottom head is really hard to change out. I once had to quickly replace three snare-side drum heads, and it took me the better part of an hour to do so, with the help of three people. The problem lies with the fact that you can't take the rims off without removing the snare guts, and there's no way to easily remove the snare guts. I ended up sliding the drumhead under the rim and snare guts, but I had the help of three people to hold the rim and lugs up for me while I did it. Also, the free floating tubes don't line up very well with the bottom. It might have been due to the fact that I still had the top head on, but if you're ever going to have to quickly change snare heads, then that's no excuse. After I had finally gottom the snare-side head on the shell, I spent another good 15 minutes trying to line up all of the tubes to the tension rods. It was so bad that I had to force the tubes to line up in a criss-cross pattern so that none would pop out. It was a very time-consuming and stressful thing to do. All-in-all, if you plan on buying this drum, I would be prepared to go through horrible bottom-head changes because this drum's construction makes it insanly hard to do so.

BTW
When I say they don't offer a dual snare model, I mean the same drum with just a top snare unit, not the Fife version.

Pros: Lightweight. High Quality for Price. 100%Maple
Cons: Difficult Change of bottom head.

I have a Pearl FFX 14x12. I love this drum. It is the best drum I have played. It has nice sound projection. And very good snare response if tuned right. As the previous reviewer said. The bottom head is difficult to change out. The post get uneven when the top (batter) head is on. And it also makes it difficult if the carrier attachment is on. So I usually take that off to make tuning the bottom head a little easier.

Pros: Wonderful sound, very durable
Cons: changing the bottom head is a tedious job

Though i do not personally own one of these drums, I have had enough experience on them to say that this is a wonderful product. Our line uses these drums and I believe that they are the best sounding snare have heard when tuned correctly and played with the right heads. I love these drums and would reccomend them to anybody. 9/10 in my book.

Pros: parts hold up pretty well.
Cons: bottom head replacement is a big job.

I've played on both the 13 inch and the 14 inch and they both definitely do a great job. The only thing that I would have to say I have a little problem with is that if you take apart the drum to clean it, you can strew up putting the tension rods back on having one rod lower than the other, thus screwing up tuning. The really enjoyed playing on the 13 inches because they were a little lighter which made it much easier to march with, especially in parades. The 14 inches are a little heavier but that's about it, you can get the same great sound out of both.

Pros:
Cons:

I have had this drum for almost 10 years and it has not failed me yet. I had a problem with the shell turning yellow from not covering it, so I recovered it and all is well again. This drum is at its best with an Aramid head on top and a kevlar on the bottom. The Aluminum hardware can look just as good as chrome with a little polish, and it looks a lot better visually than the silver powder coat. The only gripe I have is pearl putting their name down the side on the new ones. I highly recommend this drum to all.

This model by pearl is great....I can think of no negatives...it produces great sound and when taken care of it lasts, they don't weight too much, very comfortable to play with.

Pros: Warm tone, Great projection, Durable, completley free floating
Cons: Could use nicer badges, replacement parts

We use these drums on my highschool line. They were hand-me downs from the Bluecoats in 2002. They are pretty beat up, as any drum would be after a tour with a Division 1 DCI corps and 3 more years in the care of negligent highschoolers, but they still perform great and hold up really well. The Maple shells have warmth, fullness, and tone to them which carries the sound to the stands alot better than a Birch shelled drum. Combined with the completely free-floating frame, it offers color and blend that birch or not-completely free-floating drums don't have.

Some time ago, somebody decided to cut the snares down to only 8 guts, because a certain corps was doing. In order to replace these, we must buy a completely new snare unit, rather than more gut. Most replacement parts for this are not available from hardware stores, which forces you to buy through Pearl, which will jack up the prices and waiting time. Luckily, we aren't in much need of replacement parts for snare drums. (Tenors are another story)

These are really durable, and are really easy to maintain. I would recommend this drum to everyone.

Pros: Very good sound quality, easy to tune snare guts
Cons: Hard to change bottom head

I've had this drum for almost a year now, and the only problem I've had with it was changing the bottom head. This drum has a very good sound quality as long as you have quality heads on it. I've had no problems with the hardware or the shell, but when you buy it, new heads are a necessity (the stock heads sound horrible).

Pros: Light, Good Sound
Cons: Stock heads

My high school line has these drums, and i love them, enough that i bought my own. I have the 13in model with a Remo White Max Batter side head and the stock Pearl FX snare side head. These drums are awesome, they have great sound, they are light, and they always look good. I'd recomend to anyone to get this drum. The only con i have found in these drums is the factory clear batter side head, i changed it before i even played on it. So i would recomend ordering a new batter side head.

Pros: Good Sound, Good Weight
Cons: Replacing bottom head takes a chunk of time

I bought my FFX 14x12 used from our centersnare, he had owned it for a few years before I purchased it. It is a few years old but sounds great, it looks great. The only problems I've ever had with it were due to my own stupidity, not due to an actual problem with with the drum or design.

The bottom head does take time to replace though. Once you get used to taking the snares on an off and replacing the head however you can quickly get used to replacing it. To someone not familiar with the drum however, it would take a little more time.

Overall, it's a great drum I'd highly recommend purchasing one for personal use or for your line.

Pros: Very robust construction
Cons:

The high school I teach has these drums and they have had them quite a while. They are built really tough and have held up extremely well. Anyone who remembers caved-in shells, blown tension rods, and pulled-out lug casings will appreciate that this drum has eliminated those old problems.

Pros: Looks good, feels good.
Cons: one tuning lug cldnt fit into the drum key!

I have recently recieved my 14" FFX. I have seen a SFZ and the majoy difference is that the shell finishing on the SFZ is most probably nice cos you could see the woodgrains....but on Pearl, its shell wrapped. I am not too sure how well a snare drum (not wrapped) would last in rainy conditions and all.

btw, my pearl ffx was made in taiwan...anyone has their made elsewhere?

Pros: Good Snare Sound...Rock Solid of a Drum
Cons: Bad overtone when not tuned right

My high school has been using pearl snares, drums for that matter, since the beggining of time, and now I know why. For one, the drum sounds awsome. The snare response you get from this drum is the best. They sound great on a field as well as indoor, so clear, crisp and, tight. Second is the durability. People at my school have dropped them, kicked them (don't know why), they have been rained on, and everything else that could happened to a drum and they still sound good. The only problem I have with this drum is that when they are tuned wrong/bad, they have a bad overtone that sounds like a door bell got stuck in the drum. The sound does go away after a couple of feet. Atleast the audiance won't hear it. As far as changing the bottom head, it's not hard to do at all. I don't why people complain about that, but it's not as difficult as people are saying it is. I can change one out and put another one on in rufley five minutes. Overall, these drums hold up very well and recommend them to begginers as well as expert players.

Pros: Durable, Awesome Hardware, Great Tone
Cons: Stock batter head is horrible. Other than that, everything else is great.

I recently received a 13x11 in Brushed Silver as a graduation gift. It would be a lie if I said this drum sounded great right out of the box. However, once I replaced the stock batter with a Remo Black Max, it sounded amazing. This drum ceases to disappoint me.

I would highly recommend this product to anyone- beginner or advanced player.

Great drum, great price.
