Description:
|
The proprietary SUEDE(TM) process creates a texture on both sides of the head that enhances the production and reflection of sound waves. The resulting sound is a more balanced, better performing head that's recommended for both stick and brushwork in a wide variety of drumming situations.

Positive aspects of the product (pros):

awesome distinct sound, overall great

|
Cons:
|
takes a shorter time to break than most heads, hard to crank

Suedes are great heads for tenors. Ever heard the Cavaliers tenor line and that signature sound they've got? It's from suedes.
I love these heads, my tenor line used them for half a season but I wish it would have been more. They have a very dry, articulate sound, and little to no overtone. If you want to crank them for a high pitched sound, poke a hole in the middle of the head with a needle while tuning, to relieve tension. The only things I didn't like about suedes were that they are quite easy to break, and like I said, usually lines with low pitched tenors have these because they are very hard to crank. I highly suggest this product and I rate it a 9.

These are nice heads. If you are looking for a nice, warm and thick tenor sound, then these are for you. I like the tone of these more than the Pinstripes, however, they break easier and are slightly harder to tune.
I will oppose what the guy above me, NEVER EVER poke these heads in the MIDDLE...always off about 1 inch in from the bearing edge farthest from the playing zone. And the Cavaliers don't use these, the Blue Devils do.
But overall, this is a good head, in my opinion, it's designed for quieter, lighter passages. They tend to lose quality of tone in areas with louder dynamics and accents.
I would suggest the Evans MX White series tenor heads over these though.

Great Sound

Cons:

Go out of tune easily

First of all Cavies use these heads as well as BD. Lately BD uses pinstripe but thats totally irrelevant.
We used these heads this summer (corps) and they were awesome. They hold up quite well for being suede. They get a nice warm sound no matter what range you tune them in. Another thing I really like is that it is really easy to blend with other players because you dont get a lot of sustain like you do with smooth emperors. We switched from smooth whites and in my opinion are a lot better.
Down side is that they go out of tune really easily so someone better be able to tune well or you probably wont like them as much. And of course rain will effect them more than any other.
All in all I would say get these heads because they sound great however you tune them. And despite what other people have said the heads we had didn't break. We changed heads every 5 days or so. GREAT HEADS
Hopefully trying out black suede soon
