This is the standard metronome. While others might have more features or be half the size, this is the one that everyone refers to by name.
This metronome has four volume sliders to modify the volume of parts of the beat. Downbeat, upbeat, E & A 16th notes, and triplets can be added individually for working on all possible aspects of timing and complex rhythms. It has a 1/4" plug for connecting an external speaker and a 1/8" plug for connecting headphones for undisturbed practice.
The unit has a tap function where you can tap out the tempo and the unit will display the bpm measurement. You can modify the phrasing from standard 4/4 measures to 1/4, 2/4 3/4, 5/4, 6/4 as well as other combinations to suit your needs.
The unit can be run on a single 9 volt battery for portability, or on a AC adapter (sold seperately) for tethered work.

Low battery life

I'm not quite sure how old my Dr. Beat is, because I purchased it used 4 years ago from a drum teacher who'd had it for 5 years, and he'd gotten it used. It still works great after however long. As mentioned above, changing the tempo is inconvenient, but that and its tendency to run out of battery quickly (or my tendency to forget to turn it off) are my only problems with it.
