Description:
|
At Marimba One we seek an inspired solution that ultimately reflects honesty, integrity, vision, innovation, quality, and service. Marimba One was founded in 1982 by Ron Samuels. His inspiration for building marimbas sprang from their warmth of sound and physical beauty. What started as a one person shop has now grown into a ten person workshop that fills orders from around the world. Marimba One is defined in part by the beautiful environment we live in. Located in the heart of the ancient redwood forests on the Northern California coast, we derive much inspiration from our natural surroundings. Our marimbas are all custom made to order so that they can best serve our customers needs.
Bars:
Our bars are made exclusively from Honduras rosewood. All of our keyboards are "voiced" according to our customers' preferences. A popular request would be a bright and cutting upper end, descending into an even-balance middle section, with a dark, strong bass end. The bars are strung with a custom-developed, soft yet durable cord which will not rattle within the bars.
We custom voice all of our keyboards, as you would find on a piano, to our customer's specifications.
Our exclusive tuning style results in the largest possible "sweet spot" for each bar. We can tune your instrument to A440 or A442
Resonators:
Our resonators are made from heavy guage, yet light-weight aluminum, color coated to your choice of three colors: black, burgundy, or gold. Threaded tuning knobs allow for simple and precise adjustments in the height of the resonators relative to the bars. Thus enabling you to compensate for differences in temperature that affect the resonance of the marimba.
Our colo coating process is extremely durable. We also offer our resonators in school colors upon special request. Please call for a quote.
Wood Frame:
The beatuy of our wood frame marimbas is unmatched in the field. The contrast of wood and color coated resonators is exquisite, to be admired in the studio, on stage, or in your home.
We offer our wooden frame marimbas in a 5-octave, 4-1/2 octive (low E), the 4-1/3 octave and a 3-octave bass instrument. Standard features include building your instrument to your custom height requirements. We use premium-grade cherry wood for all of our frames.
Metal Frame:
Our innovative, easy to use, adjustable height metal frame marimba accomodates the needs of schools and universities with adjustable height, ease of moving, and extreme stability.
The marimba is raised and lowered through the use of a ratchet device on each end frame. Each end-frame has it's own ratchet system and built-in tape measure which tells you the precise height of each end-frame, giving each instrument a 4" range of adjustment.
Warranty:
Our guarantee at Marimba One is unparalled in the industry because of the quality we build into our marimbas. We want to be sure that your marimba meets your expectations long into the future.
Within one year, you may exchange any bars free of charge. Simply contact us and we will send you any bars you request. You may exchange bars as often as you like during this one year period. We also include one free tuning of your bars within two years from the date you receive your instrument. Marimba one guarantees all its instruments against any manufacturing defect for a period of one year from the date of purchase.

Positive aspects of the product (pros):
|
Great sound, narrow spacing
|
|
Cons:
|
paper thin low end bars, weak frame
|
|
Marimba One makes some of the best instruments on earth. Since they're custom made instruments you also get a more personal touch than you would from Yamaha or Adams.
The tone is great. Lots of low overtones for a full sound even at the high end of the instrument..
After a couple years of use there were no annoying rattles.
The spacing is incredible. You can get very wide spreads at the low end of the instrument. Intervals that are impossible on the Yamaha 6000 are easy on a Marimba One. I also found it more comfortable than the Yamaha YM-4900 and would chose the Marimba One even if I only needed a 4.5 octave.
However, and this is a big however, the bars are so thin they crack very easily, especially at the low end. If you play hard (like Keiko. There's a reason Yamaha designed their 5 octave the way they did.), you'll probably want to stay away from Marimba One.
Also, the frame is pretty weak. After a couple years of use (with no road trips to my knowledge) the frame swayed dramatically. Not while you were playing, but if you bumped into the thing it would sway 2-3".
That said, the quality of the sound and the ease of playing more than make up for the kid gloves required for handling it.
