Simply the best bass drum head I've ever heard. I've seen many high school lines that have horrible sounding snares and tenors, but when they have these heads on the basses, they always carry a great tone.
They're very durable and can last multiple seasons of indoor and outdoor.
One of the best parts about these drums is the dampening system it comes with. You can choose to use some dampening, all of it, or none at all. It's really up to you. I used all provided on the smallest drums, but on the larger drums I was conservative in the dampening for a nice bottom resonation. When tuned, these heads really speak some music, it's quite amazing.
The only slight drawback could be that the dampening pads can come loose and mess witht he tuning, but if installed propperly, and also reinforced with some tape (which is how I now put them on), the possible problem is averted and thus it really isnt a big issue.
If I had it my way, I would work with any bassline that didnt have these heads on their drums.
Reccommended 100%, and then some.

These heads absolutly rule. Even if someone who had NO IDEA what the heck they were doing tuned them, they would still soung great. They are durable and well-priced. (My local store charges an arm and a leg, but my WGI line orders them). You'd have to leave an anvil on top of each one for a few months for it to get out of tune. I highly recommend Evans...the best of the best.

convenience

Cons:

cuts down on attack, volume threshold is much lower
|
|
While these drums are great for a HS line (where there is only one instructor who doesn't have time to tune often or change heads) I wouldn't recommend them to the serious drumline.
First, the pluses:
Evans heads are convenient. In the HS setting, these heads will probably last you 2-3 years without having to change them. This is because of how thick the plastic is. Bad tuning jobs, or simply lack of tuning, can be somewhat easily covered up because of the muffling system. Basically if you don't know what you're doing with bass drums, it's easy to make your HS line sound decent.
Now for the negatives:
With the way the muffling strips are pressed on the the head and also the thickness of the head itself, it makes the actual tone of the drum sound fine, but cuts down on the sound of the attack. So from the stands you will never really head the actual hit, just the tone. Another thing to consider is that there is a maximum volume that every drum has, where after you get to that point, hitting it harder just won't make it louder. Using Evans heads lowers the maximum volume so the drums cannot reach as high volumes as with Remo heads.
Bottomline: these heads sound OKAY, but at the cost of attack and volume. If you REALLY don't know what you really want evans heads, get the ones that say "MX1" on them, not the ones that say "marching" because they are one ply instead of two and will put out better sound. But if you really want a beautiful sound from the bassline, go with remo marching pinstripes and muffle them yourself.

Well, the year I marched Bass, we still had the Muffle-It-Yourself Pearl Heads on our Bass Drums. After a while, they started to get beaten up. So, we got these heads.
These heads were AWESOME. If only you could hear the difference these made in the sound of our bass line of 6. We went from BOOMmmmmmmmmmmm
to BOOMm just that fast. It was amazing. These heads not only have good sound, but a great feel. It's easier, in my opinion, to hit those diddles witht hese heads, and play 4th bass out of 6. Also, the heads look nice when put on correctly.
I really can't think of anything negative about this product. Overall, I reccomend it 110%.

Bigger basses can really take some tinkering for the best sound
|
|
We just ordered the Evans MX1 heads for our yamaha field corp basses. We've got 18", 20", 22", 24", and 28" drums.
On the top three drums, we put in all the felts, tuned them up, and they sounded wonderful without any messing with them. On the bottom two drums, though, when we put them on, they had a horrible slap sort of sound, like the head was real loose, even though it had decent amounts of tension on it. I believe it came from the plastic ring vibrating against the head. We ended up taking a bit of felt out of the bottom two, and got a drum corp guy to come tune them, and now, although you can still hear the buzz from within the line, they sound wonderfull if you stand back.
One thing i noticed with these heads is that playing off center produces much more difference in sound than the remo's we had before did. If your line has a problem with that, this might be something to consider. Also, these heads are quite thick, so you feel alot more tension in the lugs on the top drums when you're trying to crank them.
As far as interval tunings with these heads, our best results were (from bottom to top), 5th, 4th, major 3rd, minor 3rd. It has a great sense of melody for splits, and it makes the unisons sound lovely.

Fairly good head
|
|
Cons:
|
Playing off center produces a not-so-good sound
|
|
I use these heads for the high school line I teach. The top basses usually get all but 1 of the felt strips in them, and the bottom basses get less. The sound when hit in the playing zone, dead center, produces a great tone. These heads also keep their pitch fairly well, and are durable.
One problem with the heads are maybe a bit too much muffling. With the double ply head, and the wide felt strips, playing just off center produced a not so pleasent sound. Also, it is almost impossible to play at the edge of the head with these heads. it just sounds dead. In corps we use generic heads and use insulation foam which when played at the edge produces a nice resonant ring tone. But with these heads it is just a bad sound anywhere off-center.
Other cons include the already mentioned not-so-clear attacks and the projection of the drums with these heads seems to lessen.

These heads are amazing. I have yet to break a head in three years of use under normal conditions. The muffling system is amazing, and if you have any trouble with keeping the muffling strips in place, try some of these.

Built in Foam, Easy quick set up
|
|
Cons:

Built in Foam, Volume Threshold a bit low
|
|
For the past two seasons the school I teach at has used this head.
I like this head a lot for a non serious high school/middle school setting. really easy to tune with no problems dealing with foam or glue. if you do have any buzzing with the built-in foam as said in previous reviews just add some more velcro to it and it'll help clear it up for the most part. I did notice that the volume threshold on the bassline did drop a bit. If you play anywhere off center it produces a non desirable sound. If you have a serious competitive group i'd look somewhere else for a head with more fine tuning capabilities, but if you have a non-completive band like the one i teach I highly recommend it for ease of use and decent fundamental tone.

heads pull easily, not enough muffling
|
|
We got them last year for Fever, and there was simply not enough muffling. Now, i am not a fan of a lot of muffling, but there just was not enough. We marched 18,20,24,26,30 die-nasties last year. to each head we added a ring of weather stripping (2 on the bottom). this gave us a perfect tone. (for proof: our former BD snareline instructor (was our caption head) thought they needed muffling. Also, both of our former SCV bassline members on our staff thought they were perfect.)
Also, we had to change out 4 heads before the season was over. i'd never had to change so many heads in a season...they just kept pulling. all the other heads i'd had to change just broke, these kept pulling THEN breaking. (2 of them in the middle of the show).
i don't recommend these to anyone at all.
oh yeah, we use them at our university and our instructor last year told us to only use the strips that came w/ the head. our drums sounded like timpani
