Description: Designed for top marching programs, Field-Corps marching bass drums provide a deep, resonant tone, and punchy attack.

Shell
The 7-ply shell of birch and mahogany balances the strength and attack of birch with the warmth of mahogany.

Hoops
Accurate tuning is provided, even under high tension with the 10-ply birch hoops.

Air-Seal System
The drum shell and hoops are manufactured using the Air-Seal System. This ensures that the shell and hoops start round and stay round; an in-round shell tunes clearer and provides a pure fundamental tone.

Lugs
Zinc alloy lug casings with reinforced walls and webbing provide superior strength for high-tension tuning.

Claws
Steel construction in a solid, ribbed design, ensure the shape retention of the claw hooks. This distributes tension over a wider area of the hoop, eliminating excess stress.

Nylon and Steel Washers
The nylon and steel washers allow smooth tuning at high tension.

Muffling
Sound Impact Strips eliminate unwanted overtones to promote a clear, focused tone and make tuning easier.

Available in 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, and 32 inch sizes. All drums are 14 inches wide except for the 30" and 32" which are 16 inches wide.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Great tone. Durable
Cons:

The Yamaha FieldCorps bass drums are some of the best basses that I have worked with. The hardware is top notch and can really take a beating.

The lugs and lug casings seem to be manufactured extremely well, as I have not broken a single one in the 4 years I have been using them, even with some heavy-duty torqueing situations.

The rims and shells seem to be manufactured well, as I have seen no rough spots on the bearing edges or within the shell itself. If the drums are originally purchased with a covering such as the white or silky silver, it can be very difficult to get the covering off (in order to get a stained finish) as Yamaha has the covering glued onto the entire surface of the shell. Some manufacturers attach their coverings in a 1-2 inch strip across the drum and let the rest of the covering float above the shell. Trying to strip a Yamaha drum takes a lot of work and is not always successful. The drums are pretty light for their size, as a 32" does not break the back as much as same sized drums from other manufacturers.

One thing I have noticed is that the distance from where the lug screw attaches to the claw to where the claw contacts the hoop does not seem to be consistent. There might be one or two screws that are so close to the metal of the claw that your standard lug wrench won't fit in the gap. I don't know if this is a result of the manufacturing process or if someone between the factory and the receiving dock at the school had dropped them. Anyway, it's something to look out for.

I dislike the factory or dealer installed foam configuration (see picture) however, this is a minor issue which can be changed once the drums are in your possession. There are many muffling configurations out there, and shipping them with any particular one installed seems a little wasteful. It is a little annoying that they don't just include the foam so you can install it yourself without having to go through the hassle of removing what is there then having to reinstall using your method.

As of the 2003 WGI Championships, Yamaha has announced the introduction of a 14" bass drum to the FieldCorps line of basses. This drum is targeted at the indoor area, but I'm sure it will sometime soon find it's way out onto a football field somewhere.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Relatively Light Weight, Produces Nice Tone
Cons: Design flaw will pose problems in 16" and 18" drums

My Yamaha Basses are about 4 years old now. I got them 2 years ago as refurbed equipment from Yamaha.

They've been decent drums overall, but I do have 1 major complaint: There is apparently a major design flaw in angle of the claw which will put substantial pressure on the tension rods right at the point with the threads stop. Basically, as the lug is tightened, the lower end of the claw will push downward towards the shell and actually bend the tension rod. So as you turn it, the rod is being flexed at it's mid-point, eventually weakening it enough to snap. Generally, this will not cause problems on the larger drums, but on both the 16" and 18" drums, you'll start snapped tension rods like crazy after a couple of years because of the higher tensions on these drums. I didn't discover this until just a few weeks ago when I got the 16" out to re-lube the rods and get it turned up for the winter rehearsal. I fairly quickly managed to break 2 tension rods (1 of which I was removing!).

When I called Columbus Percussion to re-order replacement rods, I had a conversation with the drum repair guy who informed me that this was a known problem with those drums. He did say that in the new Yamaha basses for 2004, they've corrected it.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): Excellent sound, light
Cons: None yet

We have had ours proabally at least 6 years i think. I have marched the 24", 28" and 32". I played for two years. They are in good condition for how old they are. Need some new rims. Harder to tune when they get really old for some reason. Good sound that I love.

Positive aspects of the product (pros): light, good sound, very nice to look at
Cons: tension rods break like crazy

like someone said earlier, the "older" models have the claw problems.
the ones we've used the last couple years in Fever have that problem, cuz they're the same drums Crossmen used in 02.
they do have a pretty decent sound and repsonse.
one of the biggest problems i've found is that if you need muffling fast and don't have a way to get the Yamaha one, you're pretty much screwed, cuz nothing can muffle these drums really well, for the most part, unless you like to put a LOT of muffling
overall, these are good drums though
definitely better than dynasty, i believe

Positive aspects of the product (pros): great sound, lightweight
Cons: none

these are so much lighter than older models, we got four new basses this year, but now have a bass line of 5. I play 4th bass, and i got an old crappy bass, it was a real drag to hold up, really heavy. I played on the 5th bass, and it's so much lighter! and it has an awesome sound, even with stock heads, it's really comfortable to hold up. We haven't used the outdoors yet, but they sound great indoors.
Ours had no muffling on the outside though...
